Default Where to buy jack stands with flat top?

I have two sets of jack stands with the tops that look like claws. They did into my car whenever I put the car up on them. I have been looking for jack stands with flat tops, and I have had little luck. A company called AC Hydraulics has nice ones for $100 each. I'd rather put the $400 toward purchase of a lift! Anyone know of more "economical" jack stands with flat tops??? Maybe the best bet is to take mine to a welder and weld flat tops onto the claws?

They don't have flat tops so that your car doesn't slide off. Do a search for jack points and you should be able to find a diagram of where to place the jack stands. You shouldn't have any problems with them digging in if you are using the right locations. I never had problems once the car was jacked up. Now jacking the car was a whole different story, You may wanna use something like what Automotion sells:

I don't use no stinking jackstands. I have a few of sets of the 3 ton ones. One set of older 2 ton with flat top. I won't use any of them, they scarce the crap outta me, and I don't wanna be under a car that sets that unstable when I'm working on it (especially, when I have it up this high for an engine drop). To each their own I guess.

95% of the work you'll ever do, you'll only go 2 blocks high in each corner. Any higher, and you'll need a long frame jack to get the car up that high also.

Concrete blocks, cost........$1.69 each. 12each blocks, about $22.00.

I thought only Camaros fit on cinder blocks!? That looks scary to me...any movement, and the blocks can tumble like, um, tumbling blocks! No?

Na, each of those blocks is rated for at least 1000lbs.

Now that being said he is really not using 12 but 4 as the surface and the base are distributing the weight the same. It is a better footprint than a standard floor jack stand but as others have mentioned it is a stone/cement based material and I would be a bit concerned if it began to fracture and/or crack. Definitely check BEFORE and after EVERY use. If there is any problem, go and add it to your "this old house" project.

Nice car Ken

Make sure you get solid cinder blocks if you're going to do that though. The hollow ones are a piece of cake to chop in half. Easier to break then 1/2" wood...but a bit rougher on the knuckles.

I know you're just lookin for jack stands but I will throw this out anyway... .

Pep Boys carries a aluminum race jack that come with a pair of 3 ton aluminum jack stands with flat tops. The jack has a max height of about 17.5 inches and I think the jack stands are about 15.5 inches. Last year I think the price was like $179 for the jack and stand kit , who knows maybe they sell the jack stands seperately.

Good luck

wow. yea. cinder blocks probably crumble like nothing if you get at em the right way.
its like duct tape. cant pull a piece apart if you're the strongest man in the world
but a mouse can tear a piece sideways

I've done quite a bit of work with the car on jack stands. Getting under a properly supported car is probably less dangerous than driving to work. That being said, I don't spend any more time under the car than I have to. Right now I need to work on the brakes, including new brake fluid. So, I don't really need to get under the car, I just want the four wheels off the ground.

Those Torin stands look like they will do the trick. Sorry, but I just don't like the claws.

Thanks for all the input,

Mark

I took 1/2inch thick pucks of round steal and welded them to the tops of my jack stands and then welded in the pins that hold them into the jacking points works great cost about 5 dollers.

"cinder blocks"? No, I wouldn't use those either. These are concrete "building" blocks.......NOT cinderblocks. Please do KNOW the difference.
