Default Classic Car insurance

Well my 86 944 Turbo was shipped out from TX this morning and should be to me in Atlanta by Friday. I was wondering, since the car is eligible for classic car insurance, if it was a good Idea? I got a quote, only $350 for the YEAR with 5000 miles, full coverage, no deductable for collision and the value of the car is at $16,000. My normal insurance co. wants $650 a year for full coverage with a $500 deductable for collision only paying out blue book. Sounds like a no-brainer, but wanted to know if anyone with 86 or older cars has the classic car insurance??

I have exotic car insurance like that on my 928. I do have to keep the car in a locked garage and I can't use it for work, but that's no problem. I have not had to make a claim so I do not know how that goes. I'm using Hagerty.

i am using infinity. the good thing with these policies is that you pay one liability premium on multiple cars. i sold the firebird and saved all of something like $100 a year.

you can drive to the track, but once on the track coverage stops. you cannot park it in front of a supermarket and get steaks for a bbq. but you can park it in front of a restaurant and eat in thier outside garden as long as you can see the car. you cannot go into a move theater with the car in the lot, but can take it to a drive in.

you can drive it to a hotel, but if you leave it in front of your room and go to bed, and it gets keyed or stolen you may not be covered.

you get the idea.

I use Aon for the 914 - car has to be 20+ yrs old with 50k miles or less (they will consider cars with higher mileage if you ask) and you must have at least as many other cars as you have drivers in your household. No limits on usage - that's the good news - and low premiums

As Tom pointed out, some policies have strict usage limits. Ask for a copy of the policy before purchasing to be sure you are willing to use your car as the policy says you can. It's easy to find yourself in a no coverage situation.

I for one won't do a collector policy because I want to use the car how I want and drive as much as I like. Good documetation helps should you need to claim against an actual cash value policy, but obviously the basis of a total loss settlement comes from book or current market values and won't adjust a whole lot.

I've done some digging on this topic as well. If you want to run errands in your P-car, and you want to do DE's it seems that State Farm full ocverage is what you want.

Some ins. cos. Will do exotic ins. where you have limited miles and no DE coverage. Some do just DE coverage and nothing else. Some won't do both. Some do full street coverage and no DE. State Farm seems to full cover streets and do DE as part of it. I figure on switching from AAA (which hates the car) on 5/1.

You may want to check into whether or not your actually covered in a track situation. I've got state farm as well and from what my agent told me as soon as you drive onto that track your not covered for anything. She even did some checking around to see if they offered a special coverage and was unable to find anything offered by state farm.

Funny. The State Farm agent that I talked to said that I' be covered wherever I drive my car. If they didn't, it wouldn't surprise me. Just seems like none of them want to cover drivers learning how to drive better. Those that do specifically cover DE events only, jack the rates way up.

Every insurance company I have ever heard of will not cover any claim for any incident on any track (of any kind) anywhere........ EVER!

Well, that's sort of not true. There are insurance companies that will cover DE use. However this is what I found out in the collectors insurance end of things:

Collectors Insurance (DE only), Either Collectors Ins. @ 2.5K Miles/Yr, or DE, not both (I want a grocery getter as well as a DE)

Grundy Full Coverage, won't insure an high performance exotic newer than 74 unless there are two cars being insured (mine is too new for htat yet)

Laurel DE Management Inc, DE Coverage, Min Coverage is 20K with a $5,000 Deductible (the car is not worth $20K, heck! it's barely worth more than the deductible)

Seems like I'll just have to be very careful at the DE's.

I guess the moral of the story is don't collect anyone's rear end on the track, and if you do push it to the nearest highway and play dumb.

Well there are $20k in recent work to it and that what I put down on the value of the car, and they agreed, so I guess there are 2 people, me and my insurance agent.

who, other than you thinks it's worth 16k?
