Alright i've been avoiding this question for a while, but there is no way around it as my 944 didn't come with a owners manual. So what is the farthest right button/switch/rolly thingy in front of the shifter with the speaker image above it? i have it selected in the middle because i dont know what else to do with it. is this related to the alarm?

Its a front/rear fader IIRC, I never use it - just leave it in the middle.

Thanks for the advice. So in summary, there have been mixed results with the "professional" kits, but overall people seem to be happy. The key is to be prepared to move slowly and cautiously when installing the new leather.

Just need to decide which one to get.

In my experience, getting leather wet causes it to harden up which may make it wear faster. Yes I had to really pull on the leather to get it to stretch over the **** part. I pulled it on from the bottom to the top and did have to trim around the area where the shift pattern snaps in too. For the person that used the Performance Products boot, did you remove the elastic band causing it to slip out when shifting into reverse? I took my elastic band out because I just couldnt get it to fit and the right front corner has slipped out and it has stayed like that.

I used the Rennbay boot...went on with no problems, but that seam started hurting my hand when it got bunched up at the top of the ****. I ordered the AGLA ready-made **** and boot. Top notch quality, but the **** is rubber, and doesn't feel as solid as the stock ****.

I may cave and buy a brand NEW stock Porsche ****/boot, at $270 from Sunset Imports! Nothing feels as smooth as the stock **** and boot.

Funny how everyone here knows about Sunset for parts, but as my only local dealer, I wouldn't go to them if my life depended upon it. Besides, no discount to locals... shipped items only. What a crappy policy, just ensures that I will never buy any parts from them at all!

That's pretty lame. Could be a tax law issue or something preventing them from giving discounts in-state?

Couldn't you towel dry it to damp and then condition the leather while it's still slightly moist?

Put it in the microwave to soften it up.* Pull hard and use a needle nose to grab the edge if you have to. I glued the top edge with 3m weatherstripping adhesive - STRONG stuff.

* Your kitchen will smell like Foot Locker.

I suppose drying it immediately will help quite a bit. I have seen real bad water damage to leather seats in the past, for instance people sitting in leather seats with wet swimming suits a few times and a few months later the leather looks like it is 30 years old. I do like the microwave idea. How much time in the microwave is too much? I would hate to fry a $50 shift boot.

at the moment i'm trying to install my shift boot from rennbay, and it is extremly tight on the bulb part, i tried just putting it on when i first got it, and it is stretching the seams and i'm worried, i guess i'll try the water and microwave idea. and how long should it be in there?

also it went on the bezel with a good stretch/pull, but easy enough.

When I upgraded my stereo, I ran the speakers through that fader switch. It couldn't handle the new power and promptly melted. I added an all metal fader and ended up putting it where the cigarette lighter used to be.

Just pop it in and press "shift boot" (well that's what I do with popcorn!)
