I have owned both cars and find that I enjoy each for their own merits, My 81 928 manual felt light and nimble with a good Bilstein suspension, I used to post great times in Suncoast Region PCA autocross at MacDill AFB in the mid 90's. The 928 has very tall gears and the cubic inches move you in a way the 951 can only dream about. The 951 has a quick hit kind of feel. You find yourself shifting very quickly and often compared to the 28 and when you hit the boost in third gear you will hurt from the huge smile on your face.
If you are looking for something in the middle, the 968 is a great mixture of increased displacement connected to a 6-speed box which promotes the feeling of a stock 951...
The 928 & 968 have a superior suspension to the stock 951...This area is my next upgrade on my 88...since a great suspension will help you realize your motors ability to move you
As far as the 928 line goes it is usually best to buy the newest you can afford, BUT the increased HP/TQ is quickly offset with the increased weight and higher maint. costs

Thank you all for your input. Both appear to be fine cars, but I am looking for the automotive equivalent of a Red Bull, something that plasters the smile on your face. The Boxster is too common and a 911 in my price range has the interior warmth of my dad's old '73 Karmann Ghia. I think the 951 is going to be the one for me.
This group is really amazing and I appreciate your insight.

Yes, but the Shark has those cool Weissach-spun zingers, like center ice chest, rear sunvisors, folding armrest storage, tilt instrument/steering wheel; dial-up door locks, cam-driven, twinarm rear wipers, and the stock, reverse-offset phone dials. The 951 only has the Zuffenhausen treatment.

I have both the 928 and 968...and the 928 is by far my preferred fun car..on track and off. However, the 968 is the more reliable daily driver car. Fewer expensive maintenance problems, except the pinon gear perhaps. I gave up trying to choose and got one of each. But if I got rid of one, it would be the 968 first. There's nothing like the thrill of a good running 928. 147mph in 4th gear and a gear to go! Some people use the 928 as a daily driver but I don't. Also, mechanics that can work on 968s are far more common than those who know anything about the 928 (928 experience a must). So I do most of my own work on the 928 since I've had to redo most mechanic work anyway. Not many mechanics know the 928 but the 968 is so similar to the more common 944 there are more options. Parts cost about the same. Either way, they're Porsches. That's enough for me. The higher the performance in a car..the higher the maintenance expenses. Go talk to the Ferrari guys about this. The 928 gives you near-Ferrrai experience for a LOT less money.
