944 speakers that fit
Does anyone know of a front speaker that will fit an 85.5 944 with power windows with NO modifications?
I am thinking of upgrading the original blau system in my 944 with something newer. Just a basic CD headunit and new 4x6 speakers. But I dont want to cut up the car as it is a really original 30k mile car so I am trying to figure out if this can be done in a simple manner.
I called crutchfield and they seem to have the harness for the headunit for no cutting, I can get the speaker plugs for no cutting there as well. The rear speakers dont seem to be a problem, but the fronts I know are going to be a pita to get to fit and look stock and crutchfield doesent even list a fit for them.
I was looking at the alpine 4x6- 2 ways as they have a depth of 1 5/8" and no plate. But does anyone know if they will just drop in and fit right, or maybe another brand?
Also, how hard is it to get to the rear speakers? The rear panels have never been removed before. I recall something about the window surround being glued to the inner panel??
Any help would be appreciated!
Nick

Alpine SPS-460A, it's all you need to know. Work beautifully in my car doors. Pick them up at a local Alpine dealer. They'll cost you, but they sound good if you don't need a lot (emphasis on a lot) of bass.

As for looking stock, there aren't many speakers that will fit under the stock grills (the Alpines don't come with grills). I have Audiobahn 4x6's that fit great using their grills...and I also have Blaupunkt 4x6's that fit--using the Blau grills. The Audiobahns are very bright. And, unless you cut out the rear panels, any speakers you shove in there will be muffled at best!
Getting to the rear speakers is a little tricky. You need to kick out the rear windows (carefully), first peeling the rubber gasket up away from the vinyl on the panel. Best bet is to get new fronts, and a powered sub you can stick in the back. Otherwise, you will have no bass!

I put the Alpines in the front a few months ago and they dropped right in. They also work perfect with the original grill assembly.
Picked the Alpine SPS-460A speakers up new on ebay.

I have the same Alpines mentioned above in the 83. Truly a great speaker and they fit under the stock grilles. I have Clarions in the 951 but used Blaupunkt grilles as they are deeper than the Alpines. I think the Clarions sound just a bit better but the entire system in the 951 is amped so it's an unfair comparison.

I have Pioneer 3 ways in my front doors, but they dont fit under the gosh darn grilles. So I just make sure that I dont kick them when I get out of the car. The tweeter is about 1/16 of an inch too big to put the grill on properly. Speakers sound great though...
And I put a Blaupunkt MP74 Los Angeles in as my Head Unit... I love it and you can get the color to match the other buttons in the car perfectly... Rather awsome I think. Still dont know if Ill ever get around to puttin an Amp and Subs in. If I do Ill probably remove the back seat.
Just rambling

I've found way to fit speakers that will normally not fit....it requires no permanent door mods at all.
Make a 1/8th inch thick spacer out of lexan or nylon material, shaped to the speaker grill and cut out to fit the speaker. The problem with most speakers is the ring that surrounds it, and pushes the grill away, leaving an ugly gap. Fill the gap.
This is my very first attempt, with lexan. The second one was done with a jigsaw and nylon material, and looks much better. The speakers are Pioneer somethingorothers and sound GREAT.
