Default Oil leaks / seal conditioner

Late last year I bought a 1990 944 S2 with very good history. Total of only 150,000km (93,200m) and a new clutch (and a lot of other work) only 14,000km (8,750m) ago.

Unfortunately when the clutch was done, the rear main seal was not - now it's leaking. The car is current running on Mobil Synth S 10W-40 and it still gets 3+bar oil pressure at hot idle (around 5 when running). I know that plenty of people recommend a thicker oil, but I figure that given the oil pressures I'm getting and the history of the car I don't need a thicker oil.

Anyway, has anyone had an experience of the "seal conditioners" that you can buy - you know the ones that are marketed as "engine stop leak" products. I know many of them simply thicken the oil and that's how they stop the leaks, but I'm hoping to find something that actually does help the seals without thickening the oil.

The only one I have found so far is Nulon Engine Stop Leak.

Any advice would be great.

From what I've heard the products that claim to stop leaks do so by swelling the seals and gaskets. At some point the effect wears off and you end up with more severe leaks than before the treatment. The general thought is to avoid such products.

FWIW I read some where on this board that leaks have "dissapeared" by using Valvoline Maxlife engine oil.
