86. Most 951's produced. Less power, but early offset if you love the Fuchs. (Mmm, I do!)
87 and later cars, more power, more refined. more expensive. late offset, more wheel options.
Problems? it all depends on your plans for the vehicle. you may want to avoid heavily modded examples unless thats what you are looking for.

86-88 (non-S) cars were all the same HP.
86 cars are a touch lighter, no airbags, no ABS option. 86 cars have early Porsche offset (23.3mm), 87+ have late offset (depends on model year) you can use the later wheels on them.
88 they had both an S and and non-S model, all 89s were "s" cars (but had no designation). 88S and 89 models had numerous advantages over the other cars.
If money is not an issue buy the nicest 88S or 89 car you can find. Stolen quote but very true, if you are ready to reach into your wallet and pull out a couple one hundred dollar bills...light them on fire, then you are ready to own a 951.
They arent cheap to own or maintain, fun cars, great cars, but not cheap cars.
