Default X Post : Fuel Pump Question

Is the fuel pump in a 951 the same as the pump off an n/a? The pump in my 951 is making all kinds of weird noise, i think it's gonna take a sh*t soon, and i have a spare pump off of a '87 944 N/A, any problems with this swap?

Also, how much of a PITA is it to swap a pump?

Thanks
Mike

It is a smelly mess. Keep a pan and rags handy. The NA pump has a somewhat lower volume delivery rate, something like 750cc per 30sec versus 850cc per 30sec, though there may have been a higher volume NA pump at one point, I can't remember. You are going to likely need two copper crush washers onhand when you replace the pump, they go on either side of the banjo which goes over the check valve on the output side of the fuel pump. You MAYBE are going to need to have replacement hoses on hand too since if yours are original they are likely on their last leg.

Crap.

Can anyone else verify if there is a difference between pumps?

Thanks

Based on PET, it looks like the 86 turbo and the 87 n/a (8 valve) both use the same pump, part number 944-608-102-04. A quick look at several 944 parts sites seems to confirm.

I just put the below fuel pump in my '83 944 with a fuel injected 5.7ltr V8... not much that can pass me now, it'll do the trick... and is not very much $$$

Note: on my '83 n/a, it was hard getting the line from the tank onto the pump because the pump fitting has a larger diameter... but with persistence, it can be done. May not be an issue for you.

Actually, based on the pet, the 951 used part number ending in 04 that you listed and the 86-88 944 NA used part number ending in 05.

Oh, and I forgot to add, if your pump is painted blue it is the 850cc pump, and green it is the 750cc pump, or what they call the speed reduced pump in the FSM. Not sure what the point is of the speed reduced model, but nobody sells them anymore that I have seen.

Really? I'm far from an expert on the subjet, but my PET 6 shows the same part number for the 86 turbo and the 87 non-turbo (8-valve) motors. I believe it is Bosch part number 0 580 464 021. All the parts retailers seem to list it this way too, for example:

http://www.paragon-products.com/prod...608.102.04.htm

http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/..._pg2.htm#item8

http://pap-parts.com/prodinfo.asp?nu...608%20102%2004

Wonder if some (early?) n/a cars originally shipped with different pumps, with Porshce superseding the part to the one listed above?

Should be easy enough to tell if spare N/A pump is the same as the 951, if it has the same bosch number listed above.

Sorry, I was referring to PET5 which lists the old Porsche part numbers. I assume the part ending in 05 has been superceded for a while, though I was able to buy one a few years ago from one of the online vendors. And at that time it was in fact listed on their site as the one for the 924S and NA 944.

And if you will reread my post you will discover that I stated that nobody seems to sell the "reduced speed" pump anymore anyway. BUT the problem in this instance, which is why my comments are relevant, is that Mike wrote that he has one from an NA on hand. SO if it is a used pump, he could possibly have one of the green reduced speed pumps with the part number ending in 05 which is in fact a lower volume pump than the one used on the 951.
