First thing to do is to check and see if you have spark. Take a wire off a plug and have someone crank the car while you hold it close to a ground.
Check for fuel next. Does it smell like there's gas?
The next thing that I woudl do would be to check for compression. Pull the plugs, get yourself a compression gauge, about $20, and check each cylinder for compression.
My "S" had two broken intake valve springs and wouldn't start / would barely run. We found it doing a compression test.
Good luck.

Drifting
if you can get to see the belt, then put the car in 5th gear and pull the car forwards by hand while watching the belt. Should be able to tell if the teeth are gnashed up without having enough force to damage things if they are.

Thanks, George

You don't work on cars, do ya? Tow it to someone that does, save yourself a ton of frustration. Its probably something VERY simple and explainable, I love all the previous suggestions as to what it might be..........butt........come on........it could be a million things. Good luck!

Umm, I hope it's not the timing belt. One very simple, super simple, thing to do is to listen when you first turn the key... do you hear the fuel pump run? Second easiest thing to do; check all of your fuses... before you start taking things apart.
Don’t give up! The 944 is one of the best handling, best feeling cars out there… I’ve driven a few to know. Even if your engine is blown, you have options if you want to go that far…

When you were cranking it (!DON"T DO IT ANYMORE!), did it sound like there was no compression, or as stated above like a sewing machine? Thats what mine did.
Chances are if your belt stripped, the damage is already done.

My 87 S did the same thing. Stripped the teeth off the belt as I was costing to a stop at a stop sign. The ironic thing was I was going to do the T belt that very weekend as the new belts had JUST arrived the day before...

Following one suggestion, I took my chances and tried starting the car. To my pleasant surprise, it started and idled fine. My guess is that the DME relay is going bad? Maybe something else electrical?
Best news is that no belt broke! I really didn't want major engine work, especially since I have yet to fix the other minor issues (broken sunroof, broken turn signal, broken AC, leaking PS pump, broken fan switch, etc.).

Man, everyone just assumes broken timing belt here.
Make sure all your electricals are in order. Like was mentioned, the MAF, DME relay, fuel pump (this happened to me, led to same symptoms), spark wire from coil to distributor, ect... Broken belts are usually associated with some noises from the motor, oh, you know, like the valves contacting the pistons.

Of course veryone assumes that .. probably because everyone has HAD that .. Mine was the chain tensioner ... made the timing belt look like a cheap fix..
eventually got rid of the 944 money pit. I loved it but it was bleeding me worse than my wife .. and something had to go ... was pretty close too :-0
