Default Typically how long to Koni's last?

Just curious on street driven / autocross cars..how long have your Koni yellows lasted before you felt, or they needed to be replaced? I have a little more than 20k on them, mixed in with NY winters...also i am not running dust covers, probably not the best of ideas but i didnt think about it at the time.

Im also not the original purchaser, so sadly no lifetime warranty.

And how does one remove the old Koni strut from the housing (this is on later style modified housing to work with Koni's). I had to literally slam the strut into the housing to get it in when i put them together. I suppose i could thread the bolt in one or two turns and give it a few whacks with a sledge hammer, but that dosent seem like a very high tech solution.

My car has adjustable Koni yellows from the original owner. The second owner had the car for about 8 year and I've owned it about a year and a half. They still seem pleanty firm.

150k miles on the original Koni's. They are tired, but still work.

Even though I have decided to give them a 4th chance and am running them on my car right now, I have had HORRIBLE luck with them in regards to longevity. Since I bought my car in 98 I've run NOS Sport hydraulic, a used set of OE Sport and a set of new Sport Gas (I think that is all) and all failed. I think my rears are also about shot, but I'll check them when I pull the rear suspension apart in a week or so. So far the new set on the front seem to be holding up alright.

Oh, and here is the weird part, the rebound damping always seems to stay in good nick, but the compression damping would go away. One set I had would not stay extended very well right out of the box and for some reason I didn't think much of it because the rebound damping at full hard was so stiff you could barely pull the damper rod out to extend it.
