Default FS - 968 Engine w/ Burned Exhaust valve - $3200 obo

Originally in a 94 968 - Engine does run on 3 cylinders, but has no compression on the other as it has burned an exhaust valve.

Block and crank perfect - head, pistons, and cams in good condition as far as I can tell - but as noted needs at least one exhaust valve.

Comes with DME, Harness, intake and exhaust headers. Oil cooler negotiable.

Has fresh rod bearings, oil cooler seals, and reinforced oil pickup tube.

Perfect for re-build or use the crank and block for stroker 2.8l turbo conversion.

Need to move this ASAP so we can work on a price if we can do it this week.

Engine is in Northern Virginia - can deliver within reasonable distance.

PM or email at matthew.marks@sprint.com

FWIW, you would use the crank and block for a 3.0L conversion, the crank for a 2.8L, or the block for a 2.7L

Seriously though it sounds pretty good. How can you say the block is perfect if the head is still on?

Engine makes good oil pressure - though you're right. I need to pull the head and post pics. It's at the shop at the moment.

Just curious... technically I'm not interested in a motor, but somebody who is should know these things

Claus has a 968 block for sale on eBay...the reason I bring it up is because it too ‘ran on 3 cylinders’

he says, with 1 cracked cylinder you can run it "as a 2.25-liter three-cylinder engine" …LOL

(btw... for those who have never seen one, in his pictures you can see a ‘piston squirter’ at the bottom of that bad cylinder)

How can you be sure the problem is just the exhaust valve?

Engine will be out of the car next week with the head off. We'll know for sure then.

A good leak down test would reveal a lot about what is wrong with the engine, and you wouldn't necessarily need to take the head off. I would think the engine would be worth more together, than as a project that someone had already taken apart. just my .02

In the case of the 944 engine, it is worth more (or less) after a cylinder wall inspection than it is as an assembled, uninspected engine.

depending on where you hear the "compression" (air) leaking, you'll learn a lot...
* from the exhaust, a burned or non-sealing exhaust valve
* from the throttle body, suspect the intake valve
* from the oil filler cap, rings
* from the coolant expansion tank, head gasket (of course, 911/993 owners can't use this one )

the leak-down test really is an underused diagnostic.

Basically what linus is saying, If you were to do a leak down on this engine and heard air screaming out of the exhaust port of the dead cylinder and not much coming out of the crankcase, then you would at least know that it has an exhaust valve problem. It doesn't mean that the block ISNT cracked, but you have an indication that the seller has a good handle on the situation. On the other hand, if quite a bit of air was leaking into the crankcase (hear it through the oil fill tube etc) or into the coolant, then you could tend to suspect a possible cracked block, bad HG, bad rings etc.
I know that Claus has been around for a while, and I believe that I have even bought parts from him years back (nice stuff), but for my money I would rather buy an engine that had leakdown results from a reputable shop, than a basket of parts which passed or failed a visual inspection. Again, just my opinion.
Do the 968's have a history of cracking cylinders / blocks??

Mmmm, 968 engine. SF is not a reasonable distance, otherwise I'd get my mom a mother's day present.
