i should also add then when I pump the brake it comes up (engages higher), but not as high as it used to. My mechanic checked the brakes and said everything was installed correctly so I assume all the clips and retainers are correct.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe the pads just need to be bedded in. If the pads are not sitting square against the rotor then I think they'd have to travel a little farther to really bite down on the rotor.
