Default New question related to drive pulleys on the crank.

Behind the camshaft drive pulley is a small washer, however, it does not cover the crank seal. Is there supposed to be something up against the crank seal to hold it place? I currently have about 1/16" (or the thickness of the washer) space between the gear and seal.

I'd take pictures but the batteries in the camera are dead....

TIA,

It doesn't cover the crank sealk all teh way to the outside, but the bottom of the washer butts up against the inner portion of the seal, right? I think that's how mine is. The washer might even have been concaved out so that only the inner portion of the washer butted up against the seal.

I need to dig up some batteries...

On the crank, there is a small part that extends from under the seal. The washer mates with the small extension resulting in a small gap. I know that the seal does not rotate with the crank and would tend to believe nothing is meant to press against the seal as either it would damage the seal or the camshaft drive gear would be rubbing against whatever washer would be present.

Basically, I'm thinking I'm OK here....

I'll still try to post a picture...

Here's one from the phone:

I think you are ok. Here is a picture .. the seal is partially popped out. That drive sleeve in the picture slides under the seal so that it is almost flush with the seal, then the washer goes over the crankshaft, butting up against the drive sleeve in my picture, then the timing gear goes on agaisnt the washer. I'm pretty sure that's how it goes.. I have my crank seal job halfway done.. just took it apart last weekend. I don't think anything actually touches the seal.

That's my .02.. hopefully someone who has done it more than once can validate this.

Hey Daniel that washer is very important. Without it, the oil pump cannot have enough rotation to push oil up into the crankcase and heads. I think a Rennlister on here had that problem after removing that spacer.

Thanks, Stig. I didn't remove it but was just checking to make sure I got it right.

Don't forget the O ring that goes between the big washer and the oil pump dirve sleeve. Yours my have evaporated. You need it to seal the inside of the drive sleeve.

Good Luck.
