944 Special Edition
Just stumbled on to this, I've heard of Turbo Cup but anyone seen a GTP and according to this their actually was S3's. Aren't S3's supposed to be 968
944 Special Edition
Model Year Type Production Notes
1981 944 GTP/R Le Mans 1
1986-1989 944 Turbo Cup 150 or more
1992 944 S3 33 supercharged
I've found this here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_944#944S2
Edit: this is supposed to display in a table format but it does not, they produced 1 GTP, 150 Turbo Cup and 33 S3

I have heard of the 924 Carrera GT/GTS but not the 944 GTP/R?, do a search on here on the Turbo cup cars there are lots of info on them. As for the 944S3 yeah it turned into the 968, as for the 33 Produced I have never seen or heard of them either. I wonder if they exist. I am slowly putting together a S2 registry and it would be cool to get more info on these S3's to put on it was well.

The 944 GTP or "BOSS" car finished 7th overall in the 1981 Le Mans race and had a unique 16v variant of the 944 engine which was also turbocharged and put out 420hp. I ran across a picture of the engine and the head had cast into it "Le Mans GTP" but I cannot find it anywhere!!!! IIRC it was in a 911 & Porsche mag.
The 944 GTR Turbo IMSA GTO RACE CAR was a Porsche race car that was specially built under contract for Porsche Motorsports by Dave Klem of Fabcar. It was campaigned in the IMSA GTO series under Electrodyne. IIRC only 7 cars were actually built.

Found some info;
The very first 944, a 944 GTP/R ran in the 1982 Le Mans 24-hour race. This car had the all new all alloy 944 2.5 litre engine with 16 valves and turbocharging she produced 420 bhp. It wore the number one on it's hood and was painted with the HUGO BOSS paint scheme, see below (also, see the 944 on my start page). This 944 ran trouble free and finished 7th overall, which was excellent for the event and the team of Juergen Barth and Walter Rohrl who raced the new 944. Since then racing the 944 has been a successful endeavor and continues to the present day.

Just looking at those pictures, you can tell that it's a 944 in skin only. Just like the round-d-round race cars. :-)
Well, OK, skin, engine and transmission perhaps.

I've found were the original information came from.
The information on the wikipedia website was referenced from a certain Kevin Gross who in turn used information from..Drum roll please... rennlist.org.
On this web page The 924/944/968 FAQ under "3.0 Production and import figures" they no longer mention the 33 S3's, it has been removed. So why it was inserted on wikipedia in the first place and were it came from, I have no idea.

I saw the "Boss" GTP car in person in 1998 at Laguna Seca for the 50th Porsche Anniversary bash, which was a blast to say the least. Hmm, I could have sworn that car was called a 924 GTP, which this link and this Le Mans Register confirm. The car was unique to say the least. It had a 16V head but not like the normal one that would show up later on the 944, but one from a 928 V-8. The cooling system in the 944 runs front to back (or vice versa), and that system couldn't remove enough heat when turbocharged. The 928 version has crossflow cooling, which worked much better. I never did get to see the car run because it had problems, but I did hear the engine run and it was something else.
There were a lot of Rennlist people in attendance that year. The owner of the car even came to dinner with the Rennlist group at the Baja Cantina in Carmel Valley. His wife was wearing a diamond commensurate with the value of the car... which was priceless

The 944GTP started life as one of the 924 GTS's and then the marketing people started calling it a 944 since it had the 944 block in it. I got into this argument in another thread, Its a 944! NO IT ISN'T ITS A 924!. So anyway it is both I suppose.
