Default O2 sensor necessary on an '84?

My '84's O2 sensor was disconnected by the PO. The mechanic that did my PPI told me that the early cars tend to run better without them. Car runs fine. Thoughts?

well i kno that if you plan on passing a state emissions inspection, it better be hooked up. otherwise i cant be of much help. I am pretty sure that the O2 sensor takes in whatever data it can from the exhaust, then sends this back into the computer to tell it how much gas/air needs to be in the cylinder on each combustion stroke (tells it to run more lean or rich).

Not good configuration. If You want to get rid of O2 sensor, then You should configure DME to ROW (rest of world) mode using configuration plugs - see repair manual. Big diference in performance and culture of work of the engine.

My understanding from poking through F R Wilk's site was that the O2 sensor had a very limited affect on the air/fuel mixture - it only "fine tunes" the mixture to help meet the emissions regs. The DME primarilly uses the air flow meter and engine speed to set fuel mix according to internal maps. Check out the "lamda inside" section of his site. It explains things pretty well, although it does get a bit technical.

Correct, I have run my 84 with the O2 sensor unplugged for a couple years now. It started to stumble and I could never isolate the problem. I retracked the AFM, replaced TPS, and did the cap/rotor/plugs/wires. with still no fix. So I unplugged it and the stumble (around ~3000) went away, plugged it back in and the stumble was back, so know I just leave it unpluged. Also the plugs look better IMHO. Before they were white and kind of chalky looking, now they are tan with little to no build-up. And I get 25mpg average. No smog testing to contend with though.

No sniff test here in WV. PO removed the cat, also. What manual can I find the R.O.W. DME settings in? Somehow, I don't think I'll find it in my Haynes manual.

The O2 sensor keeps the A/F ratio dittering around 14.7/1 to allow the cat to work correctly. Remove the cat, might as well remove the O2 sensor. The Porsche 944 manuals show you how to switch to ROW.
