Default CASIS at the track?

My 944 has one of those annoying CASIS shift lights that is supposed to help fuel economy. I noticed that when flogging it out on the track this past weekend it would come on when the revs were really high.

I wonder:
1. Is this normal operation?
2. Could I wire in a second light (that I could see) for the track?

Anyone know?

I have learned to ignore it.

Come to think of it I am not even sure if it works any more on my car.

it's specifically designed to come on to help fuel economy and as a redline shift light and is designed to do that. i bet it would be possible to wire up a bigger shiftlight from it.

the owners manual has a little information on this light, I don't have a manual on me so I can't quote it exactly but basically what happens is if you are accelerating fairly unaggressively (around town etc) then the shift light will come on to tell you where to shift for best fuel economy. However if you are accelerating aggressively or at WOT, the light will come on to show you where to shift for fastest acceleration.

It comes on when youre not operation at 100 percent or when its best to shift for fuel economy. Now that I think about it, somebody must have broken it on my Turbo, it doesnt work.

I know what it does around town and ignore it. I want to tap into the WOT operation and put a bigger light on the dash where I can see it. 944 is a little quieter than my 911 on the track and I was really surprised how often I hit redline. (and the rev limiter - scary the first time ).

It's actually not that bad. If you get used to using it for "around town" type driving, it actually does its job pretty well. I noticed a gain in mileage when I started paying attention to it. Obviously you can't ALWAYS follow its guidance (i.e. if it's telling you to select a high gear/low RPM when you see a red light 1/2 block ahead), but in general it works pretty well.

If you go into "aggressive" mode driving, your goal is something other than MPG, so all bets are off at that point.

If you pull the instrument cluster and simply tap a lead onto the printed board on the back to the CASIS bulb, you could run a secondary light virtually anywhere, though I'd personally recommed an LED since you don't want to get into problems with excess current draw.

if you have a 951 instrument panel you don't have it.

I ignore it but it's been handy for teaching the teenagers how to drive a stick. There's a pretty good algorithm behind it.

They probably figure if you own a turbo, you probably don't give a rat's *** about fuel economy anyway.

Unfortunately, this is a correct assumption more often than not.
