Unexplained stoppage

I have a 1986 N/A 944 that until now has been a reliable car. Just recently, I am finding that while driving, all of a sudden the engine just dies and I can't restart it aftewards. The engine cranks, but will not fire up. Later, I might go back and try to crank it again and it starts back up like nothing is wrong. I might drive a couple of miles and it dies again, with no way of getting it to restart. Again, after it sits for a while, it will sometimes restart. Since it is cold where I live right now, I am ruling out a vapor lock, or something like it. This is a very annoying problem, as I can't determine when and if the car will start again. I do smell gasoline after it dies, which leaves me to believe that this could be a fuel pump problem. All the electrical systems seem to check out okay, but I haven't ruled-out a ground problem 100%. Can anyone shed some light on this unexplained stoppage?

Maybe you bought some bad gasoline. Try throwing a couple bottles of drygas in the tank. Also, verify that you are getting a spark when cranking. I do this by taking a plug out and grounding it with an alligator clip to something on the engine. When you crank, you should see a healthy spark.
