Default Question about starter models

Ok, so I've been having some starting problems and I've been looking around to get the best deal on a new starter, if I end up having to go that route. However, some places seperate them into early or late starters while others just have a Porsche 944 starter (such as Paragon). Does anyone know if a late starter can be used on an early car?
