Default Under hood noise

My car has just developed a high pitched whirring noise inside the motor somewhere. It comes and goes when the car is at idle. Could this be the water pump? I've checked the belts and they don't seem to be making the noise. Any other suggestions?

Or belt idlers and rollers. Could be alternator bearings. Belt could be touching the covers.

Heard your neighbor has been missing their cat.

I had something similar...it was a bad AC pulley.

now.........this is a mind-numbingly simple suggestion, and i almost dont want to finish typing it out, but i have to ask.

a high pitched whirring sound, or a chirping sound? like....bad belts, or...cooling fans coming on?

Not cooling fans they make much more noise than that!! Suppose it could be alternator but the noise doesn't sound like it's coming from that area.
I will pull the belt covers off again on the weekend and have a look at the rollers.
Thanks for the tips

Water pump, idler/tensioner pullies, AC pulley... check for things that spin (bearings). If you take the belt off, and it goes ZZZZZzzzzz! and spins fast, replace the bearing/roller/pulley. It's toast.
