Default Auto Shifter and gauges

Oh this may seem like a very stupid question, but the shifter on my 86 automatic is loose like i can lift it up and down. How would i go about fixing this?
And another question. The button is on the right side. Is it supposed to be becuase i could probably turn it around if it isn't.

My gauges are dim and i hear that it is a problem that happens a lot. How would I fix this? Just new bulbs?
And has anyone put glow gauges in their 944? Do you think it would look too "ricey"?

~Thank You

I have a set of glow gauges for a late model automatic, I got fooled on ebay into thinking they were for a manual. Interested?

The dim lighting is due to a degradation of the chrome-ish reflectors that reflect the light from the little bulbs. If you take out the instrument cluster, you can either spray on some fake chrome, or use really shiney foil to restore the reflectivity, and the gauges will be bright as day.

I don't know about the shifter, but my dad has a 928 auto, and his shifter does NOT move up and down, and the button is on the left (push with thumb).

Button is on the left on both of my early and late automatic 944s (yeah I know... but the price was right). The shifter going up and down could be a set screw missing. Take it apart and look.

I know that it shouldnt LOL but it does. I'll take a look for missing screws when i get it back. I was kind of scared of trying to just pull the sifter off before but I think I probably could.

You have a PM patrat.

pull down the leather "boot" cover and there are 2 screws holding the shifter in place.. make sure those 2 are screwed tight.

Perhaps you have a RHD auto shifter? Thatd be cool, but functionally useless. I havent taken my 83's shifter apart to see how that works, but maybe you can just switch the sides.

does the button work at all? Mine doesnt so it doesnt matter which side its on. Do you push the button to put into drive? Or will it go down on its own.
