Default Shifter Rattles

Hi Gang,

My shifter vibrates and makes noise when I'm in gear. It seems like the damping material below the shift boot has worn or disappeared and I'm getting metal-to-metal contact. So, before I start taking apart my center console, what can I expect? What part would I need to order (new or used) to solve the problem?

Thanks,
Paul

Just an FYI, it could also be your balance shaft belts and/ or the motor mounts. The part your refering to usually creates slop not shake.

You can check the situation out by just pulling up the boot frame and inner bellows. The peg off the lever wears over time which results in slop. If the washers are missing it might buzz.

Yep, if it becomes worn enough, it will be loose even in the middle (usually the fattest part when it wears). If it's loose there it can/will rattle.
I've had 2 do that before, both my 86 and my 87.

Mine rattled too, and upon inspection I found that it was the 2 screws that were just a little loose. After tightening them up, the rattle stopped!

Thanks for the info. Now I have a better idea of what to expect between now and Saturday when I can do some wrenching.

Is there a lot of side-to-side slop in the shifter when the car is parked and in gear? If so your shift lever pin is probably hour-glassed and worn. If it's pretty firm you need to look elsewhere. Bad motor mounts and out of sync balance shafts can do some weird stuff also as far as vibrations. My 83 had one shaft off 180 and the other off 90 degrees; what a difference after the belt job.
