Default o2 sensor voltage?

i need help on this one, please.

just had my 951 diagnostic check, per the state of california,to pass smog,

and was told that my cat was clogged, and o2 sensor is no longer working.

the technician told me that the o2 sensor that i purchased from paragon

but have yet to install, will burn out in as short a time as 30 days, due to

the "voltage drop"because it will have to be spliced into the oem wires.

the gold shield shop however has an o2 sensor which is $240,plus tax

and $100plus labor, that won't burn out due to it being non spliced.

does that sound like someone is trying to blow smoke up my ***?

anybody ever heard of this voltage drop?

what is the voltage reading on a 3-wire o2 sensor,5-volts?

thank you,

rolf morrow

Yup, big load of hooey.
Run, don't walk away.

The heater in the O2 sensor runs on 12V, and the return signal is between 0V and 1V
There is virtually no voltage drop on the signal wire, since so little current flows.
A universal 3-wire O2 sensor is fine (if yours truly is shot), but make sure to use crimp connectors, don't solder them.

thanks for the help.

tomorrow, when i go retrieve my 951,i will ask tech to show me the

manual reference concerning the "voltage drop",

bet he can't.

i can file a complaint with b.a.r.,on the gold shield shop,

the same place, the state of californias, dmv, suggested to me i had to go to

in order to retain my status as a non-polluter.

i was a gross polluter at 15 mph

passed at 25mph on their smog dyno.

it is becoming easier for the scam artists to operate in california

with all the smog rules changing every year.

thanks again.

[Rant Mode On]

Your "mechanic" should be shot for lying, and if I were you I would report his misinformation to his boss.

This kind of crap goes on all the time so these "parts swappers" can earn commission.

Just replace the sensor yourself. Cut the old one off and use crimp on butt splices. DO NOT solder the O2 sensor signal wire!

When you get done, take the car back to the same place, and when you pass emissions, shove the test report up the "mechanics" back side.

I just installed the universal 3 wire sensor from Paragon. Pretty straightforward install, took about an hour, including putting the car on stands. The kit includes are the necessary splices, etc.

thanks to all the rennlisters that helped me out.

i picked up 951 today,tech/mechanic told me that

it was just his whole 3 years of experience that he has seen the

universal 3 wire o2 sensors, give uo and stop working.

the sensor he had was the same bosch o2,except for connectors.

i told him of all the inquiries i made, said he was basically full of $hit,

he told me i had my opinions were flawed and he was right.

guess i will be filing bar complaint after all.

thanks again for assistance.

Three whole years huh? That must mean that my 40+ years of working on cars isn't worth a plug nickle then!

What a moron, and I'd bet he has a diploma from some "technical school" to prove it.

Rolf,
Was this a local shop near you or downtown Sac? If it was a smog shop I'd turn them in for sure to CAL BAR and they will investigate every claim. That's why I go to 'Test Only' shops, they can't do repairs.

****, I've got more than 3 years of working on cars and I'm only 21.
This guy is seriously full of it. If he is bragging about 3 years of experience, he's dumber than we all thought.

no , not in sac,
up in el dorado,tech/mech looked like a deer in the headlights.
i will contact b.a.r. and give them up,f#ck em,they tried to work me,
they probably rip people off daily that really don't know anything.
i am just an somewhat marginally retarded novice with these 951 vehicles,
and i spotted that smoke they were trying to blow.
thats why i try and do things myself or ask you guys that are
straight up obsessed with anything porsche.
most of these shops are a bunch of punks.
thanks again for all your help,
rolf
