Question Transaxle swap questions

Sunday morning pulling out of my street I had a loud pop/bang. I then turned around to go back home to inspect, but after getting back on my street there was a "thud" that would not stop till the car wasn't moving. I was thinking at first it was my Cv's, nope that wasn't it.

Today after inspecting and repacking cv's I figured time to drain the fluid in the transaxle. Once the drain plug was pulled and fluid draining into the pan I heard something bad.. and little thud. Looks to be a tooth off the ring or pinion.

Ok, enough with my dribble..
I drive a 1986 944 n/a 5-speed

Question time:

1. How hard would it be to replace my R&P? (as I do have the M220 transaxle, and don't want to just trash the trans)

2. Would a transaxle out of a 1987 924s work for the time being? (just to get my DD back on the road)

I have a friend with a 87 924s he's parting, and just hoping this could be a easy quick solution for now. I really want to fix my existing trans, but as this is my daily driver I can't have it off the road while i fix or have my trans fixed.

Thanks in advance.

The 924S tranny will bolt right in, no issues unless your car has an electronic speedo...

I am pretty sure the tranny will work / fit without issue. However the 924S tranny does not have the electronic speed sensor pickup. If you can live without having a speedometer until you get your tranny fixed, i would say go for it.

Use the 924S for the short 5th gear and transfer your LSD into the new tranny. You may be able to drill/tap a hole for the speed sensor. Looked possible but I never tried installing the speed sensor.
