Default Stone Guards - Are ALL of them necessary?

I installed my large stone guards in front of the rear wheels. I heard there would be major stone chips on the fender flares without them.

What about the ones on the wheel well part of the fenders? Has anyone got chips riding without the guards on there? Not that I'm lazy, but I figure the less plastic filme I have stuck to my paint, the better the car will look.

You'll be less likely to get stone chips with them.

What's the matter with the way they look?

i took mine off before painting, and never put them back on, i did however put the 4-5 inch undercoating type stuff back on along the rocker-area. i didnt put the stone guards on any of the sides and dont have any chips yet 2k miles later maybe

Right...the later part is what I am talking about. Wax buildup along the edges, black dirt sticking to the corners, etc.

When I put on my large guards, I noticed a tiny stone chip in the paint--already! Must depend on how old the paint is. New paint might not chip as easy as the 17 year old paint Porsche used on our cars, etc?

Just change them periodically and don't worry about it. Stone guards are dirt cheap compared to a repaint.
