87+ cars have late offset for a wider wheel selection, different size pistons in the front calipers for more even pad wear, updated wheel bearings, different balance shaft bearings, tensioner for timing belt, improved oil pan baffling...

Some of that is true, but the oil pan to my knowledge is the same on later 86s. 86 cars can fit bigger wheels and tires, not later cars. The only problem is that you have to run spacers for modern Porsche wheels. 86 cars you can get a nice lip on the wheel and not on late offset cars. Just look at phone dials on an 87 and an 86. 86 has a nice lip and 87 has none. Also to my knowledge the brakes are the same until you get to the Turbo S. If you are thinking of a late offset car, I would look into a Turbo S. They are bit more pricey but nice. BTW, all 86 cars have tranny coolers, the late cars it is an option.

As far as what Peter said maintence on the turbo can be a bit of a pain. They are constantly having some nit picky little problem. If you get one do what I am going to be doing now, just pull the intake and change all the vacume lines and check for little stuff to be wrong. The car is not horrible, just always something interesting to deal with. As Peter said we all need to do a drive some time and hopefully do it before Auto Fair. Joe if you have any questions, about what I am talking about give me a call.

Richard, i will tap into your turbo knowledge as my search progresses. An 86 is an option too and likely in my price range.

Peter, i'll go for the turbo if I can find the right one, otherwise '08 and '09 open other options for 987S's and Caymans.

Not worried about any maintenance issues with the 951. I can fund it and I have you guys.

I hope I can help you out some, btw you should have absolutely no problem getting 5k for your car. How many days where left on your auction when you pulled it? I know with my corvair no one bid on it up until the last day. I thought for sure I was not going to reach my reserve, well unfortunately it did. Good luck and hope to see you soon.

thanks for all the nice comments. The car has a killer paint job thats why i looks good in the pics.
But, it has been a good one - it has its flaws - but god knows not from a lack of money.

i pulled the ebay ad in less than 24 hours - i was a little aggravated and having second thoughts.
I will likely post again this weekend. Guy in my office (enthusiast - Honda S2000) will buy the NA for 5k as a toy just to mess with if I'm ready to sell. I'd like to keep the car until I know I can find a turbo or atleast until the autofair at the speedway which is coming up.

With a potential sale in my back pocket, I will likely push the ebay reserve a little higher. I will keep you posted.

Joe, I was up in Davidson today and saw my first Cayman. It was sort of a silver/grey color with brown interior. It looks absolutely gorgeous in person. Awsome looking wheels which giant red brakes. I didn't think that I was going to like it, but after seeing it in person, I'd love to have one.

Joe, I've had my Saab 900S convertible since '95 and it's definitely fun but then I've always had convertibles....Triumph TR-3, TR-6, Buick Skylark ragtop. However, for some reason I really prefer a Porsche in a hardtop, although I wouldn't really mind a well cared for Boxster S.....

I only drove it for 10 minutes and would like to drive it a little more. My dad and I were together so I drove it how I wanted - i think i could like to drive it.

I thought the car was responsive and once it hit the sweet spot starting about 6800rpm it really screams to 8000 - almost feels like a little boost. It's just too quick a burst and then you have to shift.
On the street it is hard to drive like that.

I've seen an early s2000 run at Kershaw with early 911's, 911t, 951's and seem to hold its own.
