starter problems?
For the past few day's I've been having a few problems with getting my car to start. It went from having to hold the key on the start position for a few seconds, to about 10. Now, the only way I can get the beast started is by push starting / pop starting her. I've done it twice already and now she is parked waiting for repair. I don't think its the battery because all the functions work fine when the accessory option is selected. There is flow between the terminals as I've gotten rid of the corrosion. The car runs fine as soon as she is started (by pop starting) but as soon as she is off, that sit. Whatdayathink?
I am going to take the battery to my brothers shop to get tested today anyhoo, but I am wondering if there's anything else it could be aside from the starter.
If it is the starter, I do have the clarksgarage instructions. ABout how long does droppin one of these take? 30 min? Thanks!

I've bought 2 rebuilt 944 starters at Kragen with lifetime warrantys, both have lasted just fine so far. I just can't see paying $20 to ship a dead core to some vendor selling a rebuilt starter costing $60 more plus shipping. If my exhaust fries this one it's 2 -bolts, a trip to Kragen, and a free starter. That's really hard to beat IMO

Check the starter. I had a problem with my 951 last year. Some times the starter would work and sometimes it wouldn't. When the starter would not work I could rap it a couple of times with a small hammer and then the car would start. I finally pulled the starter and discovered that two of the three screws for the solenoid were missing, and the third was loose.
Apparently the solenoid was moving just enough to jam which prevented the starter motor from getting power. Replaced the starter with a rebuilt from NAPA. No problems since.

When I changed my starter, I wrapped the new one with some metallic insulating tape called "Thermo Shield". It is available from Pegasus Auto Racing Supplies. On the 951's it seems the proxiity to the exhaust fries these things. I also ran an additional ground wire from the starter body to the car body. Seemed to make it spin faster.

Ceramic magnets + percussive maintenance = bad things.
I have a good starter from my 86 944 Turbo for $50 plus shipping.

A new starter that I purchased gave me issues for the first couple months.... just an FYI.
Actually, as soon as I put it in it gave me the ole CLICK. I "broke it in" on the bench and then it worked fine for a while, eventually gave me the CLICK again...then worked fine....then a little later the CLICK...and its been fine ever since.
It would only give me the CLICK once or twice each time, except for when I first got it (before I "broke it in")
