Default Cam Belt Tension Testing using 9201 Tool

I have the Porsche 9201 Belt Tension testing tool but find it really awkward to use on the cam belt. Where do you guys put this gauge on the belt to get the best readings?

I have a 968 and I know the cam belt is supposed to be self-tensioning but I still like to check it.

Also, along what part of the balance belt do you place your tension tool?

I've done it exactly as pictured in clark's for 968 motors -- that's probably the only place where the big klunky took would fit: http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/eng-10.htm
