Which One to get ?? Newbie Question

Almost forgot.
There is lister that posts in the Racing forum alot. TD in DC is the name.
He has a 996 Targa and was tracking it some. Then wanted to get something a little more purposeful. His two choices. GT3 or 944 NA (the 8v 150 hp type)!
What did he choose? A stripped out race prepped 944. He loves the car. He found the lack of power to be rather fun. It forced him to learn to drive the car more rather than relying on hp to get him around the track. Plus he found the car much more responsive than his lightly modded 996. In the end the 944 was alot of fun to drive and low valued enough that if the worst happened he would not be out big bucks. Plus this car has a full cage and race level safety gear.

WOW,
M758 Thank you..
What you described is just what I'm looking for in a car. To me, its not fun being the fastest because I have the most Hp, its because I have some skill. ( Maybe because the most Hp isn't in the budget)lol...
Thanks again,
Not to push it...but.... any pointers on what to look for or stay away from?

with any track car you are looking for solid mechanicals. If you plan to pull the interior it is better to find one that is not too pretty.
You can also try to find a car with cage in it already or some suspension work. Realize that any non-stock parts may be a blessing or curse depending on if it was done well or not.

My experience would lead me to believe that torque (aka acceleration) is like a drug addition with a fast raising tolerance: you can never get enough. The turbo guys express this as "boooooosssst!!!"
The S2 guys start expressing this as I need to add a turbo, or I need add a supercharger, or even I need to dump this car and get a turbo (951).
I'm not immune to it either. I keep catching myself thinking "wouldn't is be just so sweet if it pushed me a little deeper into the seat back". I have yet to decide what I'm going to do about it. For now, I'm building my S2 up so that it's the best that it can be for what I want to do with it (DEs & street). If I run out of things to do, and still have money left over, I just may put a supercharger on it, and run like 6-10 PSI boost. That'd wake the car up a bit I think.
Bottom line, to each their own, suitable to their budgets, desires and aspirations. There are no wrong answers.

How strange.. everyone fails to suggest getting a 924.
A 924 N/A in stock form is pushing 110hp (US Spec, Euro 130hp) so if it isn't exactly a desirable option. Even with head modifications and thousands of dollars later your probably only looking at 180hp max. If anything, I would recommend a 924 Turbo, they are cheap cars. I believe a 924 Turbo should be marginally better than an early 944, and with modifications should be able to match if not beat a later model 944 N/A.

I have thought about the 924Turbo. I could be wrong but, I would think there would be a greater supply of aftermarket and used 944 parts than 924 parts. Not to mention I like the look of the 944 better. Leaning strongly toward a 944 n/a. Early years, as a serious goal would be to run in 944cup series eventually. I would like to concentrate on technique and going the n/a route aid in that.
Thanks for the suggestion.

944 is a great choice. between my 951 and my old early n/a, for pure "fun" factor, i'd choose the n/a any day of the week.
nothing is more tossable, IMO. nothing feels better.
oh, and i'm probably the tallest 'lister here, at 6'7", and definetly the biggest 'lister in weight. and 944's fit great.
welcome to rennlist, and welcome to 944-dom.
early parts are cheaper than late parts (control arms, etc) and they're a bit lighter from the factory.
if no one's said it already, get a PPI on the mechanicals from a mechanic.
and never hesitate to ask the 944 forums if something's wrong.

The 924 is ok, but there major issue is parts avaliblity. There were not that many 924 sold in the US and there were many revisions of parts over those years. So some parts can be VERY expensive. 924 Turbo parts are very much in that situation. 944 parts are common by comparison.
Also there are more 944 being tracked and race thus the body of knowledge on these cars is greater. The other factor is many of the 944 parts have been upgraded slightly over the 924 parts. This you have a little better parts for the hard duty track cars see. Plus 150 hp is really about as low as you need to go interms of hp. Going much below that and you go from slow down the straights to just plain slow. Even then when you consider the cost difference between a built up 944 track car and 924 car you really don't spend much more on the 944 even including the car.
Also at the end of the line is 944 cup where you can race that same car. Sure the 924 runs in 944 cup, but it just can't keep up.
