Default 1.1kw or 1.4kw starter, which one do I want?

I did a search and could not find the magic combination of words that would yield the results I needed.

I need to get a new starter for my '86 951. Some parts places like both the 1.1kw and the 1.4kw starters and some list only the 1.1kw.

Which one do I want, and why?

And before anyone offers, I do not want a "good" used starter. The one I am replacing was a "good" used starter that replaced another "good" used starter. So needless to say I want new or reman. with a warranty this time around.

Thank you
Tom

Anybody?

Where have people bought a reman. starter from and had good luck with it.

I bought one years ago from a place in Georgia and it was junk, so was the replacement that they sent me, I'm just glad they crapped out within the 90 days of warranty I had. I'd rather not go mail order this time around.

Thank you,
Tom

Default There's a place in Philly that wil lrebuild your old one for you.

DOn't remember the name, but it's on Allegheny Ave Just west of Westmorland St. Across from the laundromat. It's one of those "oldskul" places where there's barely lights, everything's dirty, and an old guy with a limp comes up to help you after waiting alone for 15mins.

They quoted me $100 to rebuild, said it would take a day. Didn't care if it was Porsche or Ford. they've been there longer than I've been alive, and were recommended by two people. haven't used them yet, but if your close to the city, why not?

Sorry I can't help out much, but to hazard a guess with my basic electrical background:

The 1.1kw and 1.4kw starter depends on what kind of battery output you have. IIRC the 944 came with a 50 Amps-hour battery standard( I'm not sure about the 951) and the automatics came with a 63 Amps-hour, which was optional. Maybe this could answer the "why" part.

As to which one you want, I don't think the overkill is what you want, just get what you need.

I hope this helps, but don't take my word for it as I'm not sure. Some of the smarter resources will be on later I'm sure!

Thanks for the input. The parts guy told me the 1.1k is listed for every 944 made from '86 on, but I don't know if its only for the manuals or not. I figure if its good enough for the 3.0 liter, its good enough for my lower compression 2.5 liter.

I'm near Carlisle, about 45 minutes south of Harrisburg, just a little too far to drive for a rebuild. Now if I was still at Drexel, that would be a different story.

I'm going to go with the 1.1k, if it cranks slow I'll pop for the 1.4k, changing out a starter is easy enough and they can get one next day for me.

Thank you,
Tom

for what its worth, there are at least two different physical sizes of starter motor. I just replaced my starter with one from parts america. The fresh starter was $90 + core, and the unit they sent me was MUCH larger and HEAVIER than the core I sent in. I dont mind since I have a street car, and figure the larger unit may be more robust.
