Default Mobil 1 and clicky lifters

I have ran Casrol dino oil in my S for the last 4 1/2 years, 20w 50 in the summer and a mix of 20w 50 and 10w 30 for winter.

Never had a lifter click unless the 20 50 was in there with cold temps +20F or so and the car sat for several days, always outside.

Last week I changed to Mobil 1 15W 50 full syn., now if the car sits overnight, this am was 28' when I started it and the lifters clicked 'til they pumped up. When I started it Friday, the car had sat for 6 days and clicked when stared, I was surprised at that, but thought..well it has been 6 days and it was cold.

But I really can't accept the lifters draining overnight. Any ideas as to why the Mobil would do that?

218,000 miles...not stellar, but decent oil psi.

Mobil has a history of making noise, from what i know its usually just the oil allowing sound out, not causing damage, but im not sure on that..

The oil letting sound out? You are right to be not sure.

maybe the thinner oil is showing signs of previously hidden wear? Just a stab in the dark..

Hi Paul!!

Hi Paul!!

Hey Dood...S'up?

But I just replaced Castrol 10w 30 dino with 15w 50 syn. ?!?!

After I thought about it a bit more, you would think that the same properties that make synthetic oil leak worse out of an older engine would be that same properties that would make it leak from the lifters...the overnight thing is just irritating though.

Make sense?

not sure-- there are oil geniuses here who know all bout viscosity and such, I am clearly not one. I have heard of leaks after switching from dino to synth, and iirc it's the viscosity difference as well as dino oil swells seals more than synth that makes this "produce" leaks.
Going on my memory here tho.

The new noise is a new one on me bruddah.

good point i worded that incredibly poorly, what i meant was Mobil One contains no parafins like many other oils, this is good for cold starts because they have a tendancy towards solidifing, however parafins do a good job of suppressing sound, and many other/most other oils contain them so it is not uncommon for Mobil One to "let more sound out" for lack of better wording, this used to be in mobil ones FAQ's (but has since been removed) and has been discussed ad nausem on Bob is the oil guy, the general feeling has been that esspescially with the great #'s it consistently shows in UOA's that Mobil was correct in the sound not hurting anything, also i believe parafins were the big ones mentioned however other substances were as well that i just dont remember.

Not sure if this is true in your case, but just letting you know what i know about the subject.

Sorry again for the wording....

Personally, I'm never running Mobil 1 again. I think it has turned into **** water. I used to like it, but no more. I'm switching to AGIP 10-60 full race...AND saving twice as much money by switching.

The new formula Mobil 1 seems different than the original. I now have minor leaks after 2 years of using the older blend. I think they put more detergents in the new blend. I'm going back to Valvoline racing seeing how I change oil at short (5K) intervals anyway. I won't miss the premium price at all.

I hate to admit it, but it's STP...the ONLY reason that I used that one was that I couldn't find a Mahle and I remembered that about 2 weeks ago someone posted that STP had a good drainback valve...and I WAS NOT going to pay $16 for a Wix.

I now have a Mahle to put on as soon as my son gets the car back to me.
