Default x-post: Switching oil grades

Posted this on the 944 Turbo forum, but would like to see as much views as possible on this.

I am switching oil grades from 15w-50, to 20w-50. This is due because Shell and Mobil 1 have decided to remove this grade, and go for a 0w-40 oil grade.

0w-40 is NOT a good oil for my condition, since the weather gets 45+C in summer.

Shell has 20w-50 oil (also known as dino oil for you Americans), my car has 170,000+kms (105,000+miles). Are there any downsides from changing engine oil from 15w-50 (fully synthetic) to 20w-50?

The 20w-50 is thicker offcourse, and would require and more frequent oil change (5,000kms opposed to 10,000kms by synthetic), but any downsides?

I have an N/A, and run Valvoline 20-50. I live in Arizona so the temperature is about 110 F in the summer. I do't knoe exactly what 45 C is but I am assuming they are realtively close. And yes, you do have to change the oil a bit more often. I change mine every 3,000 miles. As far as what would happen when switching from synthetic to regular, I don't know if there would be any downsides. Hopefully this helps.

45+C is 113F+

I saw 125-130F (50+C) two summers ago !!!

Now it is 14C (57F), see the major drop on seasons?

I don't recomment 20W50 if there were no or minor leaks when running on full synthetic.

You should try Valvolne VR1 Racing 5W-50 or 10W-60. I think Castrol RS 10W-60 is the best (i personally use it), but expensive. If You want to try mineral (dino) maybe Valvoline Turbo V 15W-50 will suite You.
