Flywheel lock alternative?

I've changed belts without locking the flywheel before. I only lock the flywheel for taking off the crank pulleys, which means 155ftlbs of torque. I wouldn't want to press that brass thing against my aluminium pistons with that much force, let alone stress out the spark plug hole threads. Though it is a creative idea.
This thing is probably quite useful for steel/iron cast engines, especially when there isn't a nice convenient flywheel lock tool like the one available for 944s.

I have changed the belts without locking the flywheel as well, but i did notice something when doing so.
I accidently left the car in gear, and i couldn't rotate the engine more than a few degrees either way (CW/CCW). Would leaving the car in gear lock the flywheel and remove/torque the crank bolt?

Don't use it !
This is not compatible with aluminium head. I had to use 1m braker bar with lots of force to unscrew the crankshaft bolt. I don't think that spark plug thread would survive this if I had been using that "tool".

You don't need to lock the flywheel to change the belts...I've now done it 3 times without! It really does come in handy for removing the crank pulley bolt though (waterpump job). I looked around for a substitute, but I found the lock is really the best thing to use if you have to remove the crank pulley. They go for $20-something bucks on eBay all the time, I'd say just grab one.
