Default Need help with Balance Spanner Pin Wrench

Im in the middle of changing my belts and front oil seals, but I can't get the lower balance shaft spanner removed. Every time I insert the pin wrench the pins bend before I can get the locking nut loose. I straighten them out in a vice, but with the same result each time. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong? Thanks,

It sounds like someone really torqued that bolt down on the balance shaft. The pins on the tool are not the stoutest things either. If you have a pair of large adjustable pliers, try gripping the gear with a towel between the pliers and the gear while you try to get the bolt out. It will give you more leverage. Or, if you have an air impact wrench, just hit the bolt with that and it will come out without a problem.

Aribop,
Unfortunetly, no air impact wrench, we tried the manual impact wrench (hitting the breaker bar with a hammer) but still ben the pins. I guess we will try the pliers and towel trick. Thanks for the suggestions.

UPDATE

Using Aribops suggestion, we wrapped the gear with the old balance shaft belt (its being replaced) grabbed it with a large set of adjustable pliers and propped the straightened pin wrench against the waterpump. The bolt came off!

Thanks very much for the suggestion!

It also sounds like you were using the pin wrench wrong - the pin wrench should be inserted fully flush against the pulley, so there's very little bending force on the pins, only shearing force.

I don't have a spanner wrench. I normally use 14" channel locks with a rag, it won't hurt the gear unless it slips. Get it on good and tight and normally it's not a problem.
