Question Re-painting a different color-resale value?

I am a proud owner of an 89 944 Turbo "S". The color is gold and it wouldn't hurt to get a new paint job. I was thinking about having the car repainted in black. How would this affect the overall value of the car? Resell? Opinions appreciated!

Also, how much can I expect to spend? What can I do to cut costs?

If you plan on doing a factory quality re-color be prepared to yank the motor, suspension, hell, take the entire car aprt.

To answer your question, a re-color will hurt the value. Personally I will never touch a re-color unless it's dirt cheap.

it would drop the value. anytime they pop the hood and see the gold there, or in the hatch area it would be noticeable. i doubt you are going to strip it down to a bare shell, and the option sticker will always prove that it is a different color. original is much better off, always.

for a good paint job, expect 3-5k, if you want to cut costs you could do prep work yourself. but since that is the most important part, its sometimes better to have a good pro do that. i know mine could have been better, but it was my first time and i was on a budget.

a turbo S is a rare and valuable 944. i would not repaint it a different color.

for most 944s, though, they aren't worth much anyway so a different color wouldn't hurt if it's done correctly (interior, engine bay, etc)

How bout repainting to a like color? Gold to silver rose? Won't be able to tell a huge difference in the engine bay?. My car has a roll bar and significant upgrades, its not like it is a factory car anyways; some could argue the upgrades will kill the value? Also has 84k on the clock and was purchased to live on the track.

Sounds to me like concerns about resale is already out the window. If it's a track car, I'd say do what you get the most joy out of.

Its a weekend driver and a DE car. I do want to be conscience about the re-sell value, but the car also has some mods and am trying to figure out since it already has been molested (roll bar, chip, suspension) if re-painting is going to make that much more of a difference in value/perception to the next buyer??

A re-paint to a different color will hurt the value significantly unless you do it right, meaning strip the car down. Trying to say 'a like color' is still a different color. Not to mention you are talking about one of the rarest 944's made. So this is a car that will carry a premium for originality. The roll-bar already molested the car, but it can be removed, so can the chip.

It sounds like your mind is already made up, bottom line is, it's your car to do whatever you want with. Even a 'cheap' respray will be a few thousand dollars, add to that how much the car will go down in value, you stand to loose a lot of money overall. Not that these cars are a good investment to begin with, but your scenario will make it worse.

You are not getting this, changing the color BAD, keeping it the same GOOD. If you don't like the color, sell it and buy the color you want. In the end it will be cheaper..

Having said that, if you are only tracking it, do what the hell you want I missed that part. Signal Green is a good track color, seriously.

I know that when I was looing for my S2(I also looked at turbo's and turbo S) I wanted one that was the original color. And If I knew it was repainted a non-orgianl color I would walk. A turbo S is a Very rare car, I would keep it the original color. like others have said, if you want a different color sell this car and go buy one in the color you want.

Too bad there is no such thing as an 89 "turbo S". It's just an 89 turbo that has the same upgrades as the only true turbo S which was somewhat rare and only made in 88. The 89's are not as common as the 86's but they hardly considered rare at this point.

In general, I think changing the color will lower the car value unless it is a very thorough job. And doing so to a rare model 944 seems another good reason not to. If this is a track only car though, I can't see where it would matter since track cars generally see plenty of modifications anyway.

Thanks for the opinions. I think I will leave the car alone based on everyone's feed-back.

With depreciation, your use, and the car will probably never go back to concourse quality, paint it bright f***ing pink if you want. You are not going to profit on the car. Spend your money on what you enjoy.
