After starting my clutch replacement yesterday on the hottest day on record (45 deg C) 16 hrs later & one skinned knuckle (several times) I have finally just managed to get the clutch, pressure plate & housing installed.
I have just called it a day as the clock was indicating beer o'clock. I will install the rest of the bits including the transaxle tomorrow night after work.
The job was a bit frustrating at times (how hard is it to install the clutch fork & clutch housing at the same time!!!)
The Haynes manual makes nice reading but is very scant on real information apart from torque values etc. Clarkes garage was a good guide but could be better with some pics.
Finally, I don't know how I made it trough Christmas driving with the old rubber centered clutch in such bad condition. The rubber had totally separated and was only prevented from fully rotating by the uneven break.

Yikes. That's one uuuug-leeeeeey lookin' clutch. Congrats on the install - clutch replacements on 944s are certainly not for the faint of heart. Keep us posted on the re-assembly - with any luck you'll have it back together and running again soon!
"Beer-o-clock". Hehe. I like that.

Yep, I also installed a Sachs spring centered clutch which was standard issue from Porsche Australia. I think they may have discontinued the rubber ones due to high failure rates.
Anyhow can't report if the car is running smoooothly with new clutch as I have been at work all day and just spent the evening re-fitting the slave cylinder, starter, speed & ref sensors, gearbox, & rear axles. Now I am having difficulty aligning the splined end of the driveshaft to the splined end at the front of the gearbox, the connector thingy is soooo close but won't slip over the driveshaft splines.
I have run out of patience and don't want to damage anything so I will attempt again after work tomorrow with the trusty neighbor/assistant. Watch this space!!!

The job is completed, the new clutch is as smooth as silk, it still took around 20hrs working mostly on my own or with my 10 year old son (future P-Car nut). The trusty neighbor was enlisted for some of the heavier stuff.
I guess if I was to do the job again it would be a little faster but I could only dream of a 5hr clutch change. Anyhow if any of you Sydney based Rennlisters ever consider doing the job give me a yell and I'll be glad to help.
Finally, one small piece of advice that none of the manuals give is that you don't need a clutch aligning tool, you can simply use the drive shaft itself, I did and it worked a treat!!

I used jack stands, a hoist would have been so much easier but I don't know of anywhere you can hire one in a garage in Sydney.
I understand that in the USA you can hire an industrial unit/gargae with a hoist by the hour.
In hindsight I would should have raised the car high enough to be able to roll over whilst working under it. (I have bruised shoulders)
