Default 951 Question

A few quick questions about the 951:

1) Was 1986 the first 951, or was it called a 1986 1/2?
2) Was the Turbo S only in 88 and 89, while "regular" 951's were 86 and 87?
3) I have found a 86 {or possibly 86.5} 951 with 97k on it for $7k. Good deal? Body clean, unknown interior. And I will have it checked over pre-purchase. [yes I realize alot of the unknowns can affect price, but assuming decent car]
4) Were the wheels/tires different sizes on 86/87 944's and 951's?

'86 was when the first 951s were produced
turbo s was only made in '88, the '89s were 951s with the same specs but not actually called "s", normal 951s (ie 220hp were made in '86, '87, and '88)
thats a pretty decent price, but alot of things can affect that of course
the sizes were the same, the offsets were different

1. The first model year the 944 Turbo was available was 1986.

2. The Turbo S was a sort of a special edition 944 Turbo for 1988. It was basically a higher trim line. In 1989, the standard 944 Turbo was basically 1988's 944 Turbo S.

3. That seems like a very fair price, any idea of the recent maitenence stuff like the clutch, timing belt...etc?

4. The stock size wheels for the 944 Turbo were 16x7 front and 16x8 rear. Tire sizes were 205/55/16 front and 225/50/16 rear. Just the offsets are different beween 1986 models and 1987, '88 and '89 models. It was 23.5mm (something like that) to 53mm (something like that... ). In my opinion nothing beats the look fo those deep dish early offset 16 inch phone dials!

The reason for question #4 is there is a 87 944 parked next to the 86 951 and the 944 has black cookie cutters I believe, and I love those. The 944 is black, the 951 Guards red. I was hoping he'd swap the wheels and the better set of tires for the same price.

An '87 NA with cookies? Spacers maybe. Never really heard of that. Most lates, 87-up had 15 and 16in phones. The 951's have bigger brakes than the NA's and would be a tight fit at best. Magic maybe. 7K for a 951 sounds about right. Expect some maint needs to be done weither they are disclosing it or not. Most cars I see on lots do not provide docs' on PO maint.

Buy from a private party if you can. You would likely have better luck and more history on the car.

I had to lower my price point, and a 951 is actually going to be cheaper, at least intially, then a 928 S4. I had started surfing over here as I wanted a 968 Cabriolet and found myself liking the 951's I have seen. Maybe someday I'll get to add a 928 S4 or GT to the 951 I'm looking at. I still post on the 928 side from time to time.

Incorrect - there were 100-ish 944 turbos released in 1985 for ROW only. The 951 in the U.S. was released in 1986 (this is true) but when has Porsche's newest/best stuff EVER come to the U.S. first? Answer: never. The U.S. DOT standards are a thorn in Porsche's side - always have been, always will be. As such, the ROW gets the "best" cars "first" and we get what's left.

Many people confuse cookie cutters with phone dials. I would bet that the 87 has phone dials, a very rare and sought after Porsche myth of a wheel. j/k

87 is late offset and the 86 is early offset. While a swap from late offset to early is possible, it's not a direct bolt on. The other direction (early to late) is not possible - at least not without looking funny. I'm thinking all Cookie Cutters are early offset? If so, the ones on the 87 must be Phone Dials. At any rate, a straight swap isn't advisable.

POP- right on the money about the 1985 deal.


everyone else. cookie cutters will not clear the brakes w/o some extreme spacers. get ready for 13" daytonas with white walls sticking out to the sides of the car.

1) First 944 Turbo was spotted at Nelson Ledges in 1983. The first US 951s were 1986 models, though there were 1985 ROW.

2) Turbo S was a special model sort of an 88.5 if you will. All US 1989 spec cars are "Turbo S" models. There were non-S 1986,1987 and 1988s.

3) Just depends

4) Yes and no 1986 951s came with Phone Dials as standard in a 16*7 and 16*8 with a 205/55R16 and 225/50R16. They were also offered with a 7/8" Fuchs combination (same tires) as well as with other options through the Porsche boutique. The 1986 cars are 23.3mm offset and the PDs actually look pretty good. The 1987+ cars are 52mm and the PDs look like crap (PDs were the stock offering, Forged "man hole covers" were available as an option).

Somewhere on this site I have given a wheel listing for every year with standard and optional, etc. I think it covers pretty much every option (or every option I have ever seen, which is a lot of them).

Some early 951s were delivered with 15" wheels and non turbo brakes....but you could make them clear the turbo brakes with a small spacer or by taking a dremel to the back of the spokes.

You can spot a 85.5 by it's lack of 3rd tail light.

do all 85.1 and earlier have the antenna in the left fender? i always liked that. then again, i like my little 968 antenna above the hatch....
