Better question is why would even think of buying chains from the dealer in the fist place. Chains are chains, nothing mysterious about them.

i was like "yeah, i know, but i was just wondering"

Why the hell would you drive your car in snow?

That's what rentals are for.

well, it's not supposed to be snowing, it's really a "just in case" type of deal.

i am not paying 350 USD for "just in case"

You cant even use them for just in case... Unless you expect to be caught in a lot of snow. If its just a dusting, chains will ruin the road and your tires/rims. And fail fast.

Chains/cables really only work in deeper snow or solid pack stuff.

Yup. best bet is to buy a set of cheepo 15" wheels and put some 'rally' tires on them. But then again, when was the last time it snowed in the valley?

yeah, i'm NOT using them on like, anything less than some packed snow, which i shouldnt run into. but you know, you really never know.

the roads up there are usually kept salted, since it's a resort area, i dont have MUCH to worry about, but there's supposed to be some serious snow on sunday (note-serious snow for cali is like, a foot), so yeah, the 50 bucks to buy them and have them in the trunk and mount them before i run into snow shouldnt be too bad.

Personally I would rethink driving your beautiful 951 to Tahoe if they are expecting a foot of snow on Sunday. I drove a new Explorer that way last week in clear weather and the black ice was not fun at all. Highway 50 is notorious since it's in a canyon, take 80 if you can. I doubt you'll see much snow Sunday. Drive carefully, idiots lurk amongst us.
