I had to do mine a couple of years ago, but this was what my mech. showed me to do..Just check your new ignition to double-check the measurement.

It sounds like you are talking about removing the actual lock portion so you don't have to have the key in to turn the wheel. This is a requirement in most race series.

It isn't too bad. I don't know about early cars but on a late car from memory:

Remove steering wheel.
Remove trim panel around instruments.
You may have to remove instrument cluster (I think you do)

At this point, you should have access to the two bolts that hold the ignition lock/switch to the column. These bolts snap off by design in the column when it is assembled. I use a dremel tool to cut a slot into the top of each bolt then use a flat tip screwdriver to remove the bolts. They are tight at first but once you break them loose, come easily.

Once you have the assembly out, simply use the dremel or a grinder to cut the pin out. You could probably disassemble it and figure a way to remove it but it is far easier to just cut it.

Reassemle in reverse order.

Good luck!

Mike,
This might help. Jonathan had to replace a fried switch/harness and there are other links in the thread. Good luck, it's not a fun job. I have a spare assembly with key and switch from an 86 T. The concept on the early cars is pretty close to the 86. Let me know if you need parts.
