Default thermostat?

Hey guys,

when the water temp gauge reaches the 3/4 mark, i hear 1 loud pop in the engine bay. It sounds like its from the driver side...but im not 100% sure.

I am experiencing under and over cooling. When i constantly drive, the bar never goes above the frist mark, but during city driving, the gauge constnaly moves up and down.

Is my thermostat the culprit for the loud pop? or is something else going on? thanks

I believe the sound is from the radiator fans initially turning on. I get that noise sometimes. In my case I believe the fans are hitting debris that has gotten lodged in the fan shroud, because it only happens once in a while.

The temperature fluctuations sound normal for an early car.
