Default Altenator question

I just instaled a voltige guage on my car and noticed somthing interesting. Is it normal for the altenator not to kick on untill you hit cerca 2.5k. Once it kicks on it stays on the whole rev band. New altenator as it was replaced just a couple months ago. Other then that the car runs perfect.

The same thing occasionally happens to mine...been told it's the diodes that have gone bad.
