Kumho I imagine

That size was developed specifically for Camaro and old Corvette.

No Matt, I ordered some Yokos. But I'd like to eventually get some 16" wheels for autoXs and I'd like to try to fit 265s in the back and 235s up front. Maybe some Pilot sport cups or Victoracers. Not sure. Just was checking to see if it's even possible. I'd go with 15" wheels but I have 968 brakes so 16" is the smallest I can go.

Matt, you dont want to use the 265, ideally you want the shortest tire available for an autoX. The car will be slower with a 265/45 than it would be with a 245/45 for example. That is why you see the Spec guys going to 225/50R15

There is a huge difference between a stock auto-x Miata and a 944/na with a 968 engine.

For auto-x, you want the smallest diameter rim you can fit, with a tyre JUST wide enough that the engine cannot get it to spin... The miata has a smaller, weaker engine, hence the narrower tyre..

I find I can get better auto-x times in my 968 with 17x9's w/ 295 hoosiers than I can with 16x8's w/ 225 yoko A032R's.

Principle holds true for a 944 as well as a Ferrari. Your times are better because the Hoosiers are better, not because of the wheel size and I am almost willing to be your next set of tires on it.

According to the tire calculator... http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Right now I'm at 25.0 in diameter in the back with 255/40/17. Going to 265/45/16 would put it at 25.4 in. Is .4" really something to concern yourself over, given the benefit of more rubber on the pavement? Honest question. I find that I can light up the rear wheels quite easily with the 255s that are on there now (ContiSports), especially exiting a corner.

I'm not going to move on this for another 6 months but just trying to do some preliminary research.

Matt O, I honestly doubt you will notice any difference between a 255 and a 265.. maybe if you were a national autocross champ, u might... but otherwise... not worth worrying about.

Part of the problem -- they don't make Victoracers in 255/16s. Would have to go to 245s. Probably a difference from 245 to 265, no?

I say get 245s in the rear (in a proper size) and keep it as close to an unstaggered setup as possible.

The 265 is about an inch taller and that will be a large stagger which might induce understeer. Your car makes a lot of power so that might not be that big of a deal.

I would definately go wider, you make enough power to utilise it.
