I believe the large red is the ignition, the green is 12v constant...From what I understand from the faq, pins 3/4 on the 6-pin are connected together? The Red is ignition, green is 12v constant, large brown is ground, I think the other two are another ground and the amplifier for the antenna. Anybody else? I guess the easiest way would be to have someone with a stock setup take a picture.

Logically, you could deduce that and that's what I was thinking as well; however, the green/white is ignition, red is dead on both constant attempt and ignition, but but brown is ground...

Jeez. Can't win for losing!

I am going to have to trace back the red and two small wires to find out where they are under the dash somewhere - who knows what the PO had done...

Or, you could just run a wire from the battery and add a fuse

I hate to beat a dead horse, but I somehow doubt that you are building a concour car and unless you are there is ZERO reason to spend time tracing that which can be fixed in a matter of 2 minutes.

If only I still had my 944, I could solve this for you in 10 minutes . I will look for the original wire harness after work, I *may* still have it.

I am absolutely beside myself right now. Oh well - the frustration just makes me that much more determined. I have checked the other "leftover" wiring again and they do proceed rather nicely back into the abyss from which they originate. Thus, no oddball splices or anything of that nature. I did however find a stranded plug of some sort hanging out under the dash. It does have 12v constant on the green wire but does anyone have a clue as to what this is supposed to go to?



Not to get off topic from the original issue, but there are several unused connections bundled up underneath the steering column... I can only imagine what those are for - any ideas? One of them has a loopback connected to it. Good grief. Thanks all...

If you start tracking down all the unused wires you are going to drive yourself nuts, there are TONS of them in a 944. Do you have a copy of the OE manuals?

If you are referencing the factory manuals, yes, I do have them and printed the electrical. I am having oh-so-much-fun tracking the colors ands leads!!!

Here's the deal...

After scouring Haynes (worthless) and the Shop manuals (helpful but didn't do much good) I managed to get my stereo installed. I used a multimeter and toner to trace the remaining wires, of which, one *should* have been a 12v constant for the "battery" connection. Come to find out that the "red" wire is hanging out by the ignition disconnected with a spade connector end. I figure that it could plug in somewhere to provide the 12v constant but let it be as I wasn't going to splice into it to carry 12v. I went ahead and installed a nice 14ga primary wire, with inline fuse, and ran it to the battery. It buttoned up rather nicely and all is in working order. Amazingly enough, the ghosts of bad installations past (PO alarm and stereo) have come back for one more haunting. More insulated butt connectors and shrink tubing please! It's amazing how poor some of the work on this car was...

Thanks for everyone's support in this, I appreciate it. Oh yeah, the "spare" connector was for an optional item, couldn't tell you what though...
