You got some scary stuff going on. I'd check the VIN on the car to make sure it wasn't stolen, maybe a CARFAX, too. You might want to see if the DMV office in your state is willing to take a look at the Nebraska title to make sure it is a real title and not a fake piece of paper (they should have a book with samples and what to look for).

when he registered it in Nebraska, wouldn't it have come up with an invalid VIN as well?
Unless Nebraska's DMV has total boneheads for programmers, yes. The VIN standard has been out for decades, and I would expect most DMVs have at least basic VIN editing programs.

Part of the reason for having this is when cars go from state to state, the new state doesn't have any info on the car. The DMV has to manually key in the VIN and car info for the first title in that state, and the DMV doesn't want to issue a title with an incorrect VIN, due to mis-typing.

Here's a free VIN decoder:

I hate this part of getting a new car.

Maybe the owner had another 944(wrecked etc) and just got the title mixed up.
Contact them and go from there.

I would run the car's VIN through the Nebraska state police BEFORE contacting the previous owner. If the car was stolen, you don't want to tip him off. If the Neb SP say everything seems okay, then I would call the PO and say there must have been a mix up somewhere and go from there. If he's decent, he'll help you out.

On your car, where did you get the VIN number from (what physical location?)

Oopps, just re-read the first post, its only off by one number, maybe the Nebraska DMV simply mis-typed it?

Could be - the last 6 numbers are a serial number, which a VIN editing program would miss (DMV VIN checking programs usually don't have info on how many vehicles rolled off the assembly line - apparently the insurance company does).

For some reason earlier, I was thinking the last 5 were serial numbers and number 6 was something important.

If the first 11 characters in the VIN were right, the Nebraska DMV could have transposed two digits and this wouldn't have been caught in Nebraska unless the other car were also titled in that state (and since there ain't no such other car, it couldn't happen).

here are random thoughts.
contact pcna and confirm no vehicle was made with the wrong vin. if so get something from them stating so.

contact the previous owner for all his records, perhaps he has a copy of the title from the person he bought it from.

get very cozy with the key punch operator and hope he/she types the correct vin on your new title. the old title goes in a vault somewhere.

do you have the owners manual/protecto plate/ the vin is usually in the owners manual. check that too.

run a carfax of both vins. the correct vin should stop when your PO bought the car and the incorrect should come up starting when your PO first titled it.

get all the backup to show it is a typo and hope for the best.
