How does the computer determine which gear you're in?

I'm not sure what computer you're talking about, but I know for instance the Aim MXL data logging racing dashes just learn based upon speed and rpm. It just learns it by association, but it takes some time for it to work.

Hey Geo,

I'm talking about the "Computer Assisted Shift Indicator System" as discussed here:

Oh. Perhaps something similar or a sensor to know when you're in 5th?

the system on all of the early german cars is similar. basically it uses a vacum signal that has a preset value, it puts the light on for a given value in relation to vacum pulled by the engine(high vacum under light load is gentle acceration or cruise). it has a cutout in the throttle switches so as to provide another indicater(shift at max power) on some(not vw's) or so it does not come on under hard acceleration and all have a 5th(or top gear) lock out so as not to come on while cruising in top gear. some can be adjusted for a different range for the light to come on, some can't.
