Default Someone once asked about 2nd gear's top speed

In this post here

Yesterday at PCA Autocross day I learned that my top speed in second gear is approximately 60MPH, with a little room to go, at about 5000rpm.
Just though I'd let him know, if he's still here.

Car is an '88 924S.

You sure? My 944 required 3rd gear to hit 60mph.

Yep, I'm damn positive. We had some nice long straights on the track yesterday. I glanced down because I always wondered what speeds we hit at AutoX.
My speedometer does read a hair fast at 60MPH. I'm really doing about 57 or so according to the stopwatch and mile markers. I hadn't hit the rev limiter yet, so I figure there's a couple mph left to go.

It depends on how tall the tires are.

Good point. I'll go find out what tire size I'm running.....

Michelin P-195/65 R15 89T "Weatherwise"
Wonder what the 89T means?

Approximately 24 inches tall, give or take 1/8 inch.

They were on the car when I bought it. Looking to change them eventually.

the gear ratios here: http://members.rennlist.com/951_racerx/ indicate that top speed in 2nd gear would be ~57mph, and speed at 5000rpm would be ~45mph, however this could change if the tires you are using are not stock sizes.

Here is a list of speeds for a 944 Turbo I saw on an ebay auction, and RPM numbers...

1st gear- 39mph- 6200rpm
2nd gear- 67mph- 6200rpm
3rd gear- 98 mph- 6200rpm
4th gear- 133mph- 6400rpm
5th gear- 157mph- 6400rpm

Turbo S tops at 161mph instead of 157mph. I'm sure all other gears are mph taller or so.

Serge...

Do you mean, you were getting into 3rd gear at 60? Was yours 944 just a N/A? Seems kinda low, guy on different board said his 944 N/A topped at 105 in 3rd which is correct to some extent, and I doubt 3rd is 45 mph long.

Then, I can't really believe just getting in 3rd at 60, as my little 92 Toyota Pickup truck thats fuel injected with a 5 speed is getting in 3rd at like 50-55mph or so (I don't have a tach, so it's kinda just when I think it's about to redline, or is), and 3rd ends at 75mph. I'd THINK a 944 would be faster then 5-10mph in a gear then my truck.

The owner's manual for my car has the acceleration graph...there's a 2-3 upshift right at 60. With stock tires, I'd go with the factory's measured speed. Looking at the owner's manual, they paid a lot of attention to details pertaining to specs and performance relative to other owner's manuals.

An '83 ad said that 0-50 was under 6 seconds in this car. It would be interesting to see 0-60 times if 2nd was just a hair longer, say it topped out at 62 or so. I bet we could see mid-7 second results, considering that 0-60 in 8.2 is supposedly conservative...something about the factory wanting to make sure every car met their published spec.

Is it possible you have an aftermarket DME chip in your car with a higher rev limit? I was never able to hit 60mph in my car with a stock chip, it would always bounce the rev limiter at about 57 mph (as also stated in the manual for my '87 944) the three times i have tried it. I have since went with the FR Wilk chip with a raised rev limit. Hitting 60mph is now possible in 2nd gear, however i never bring it past 5k RPMs in any gear on the street unless im at an autocross. Many of the claims that the sellers of the chips have for lowering 0-60 times are because of a raised rev (or no) limiter allowing you to cut that extra shift out, effectivley cutting maybe .25-.5 seconds off acceleration.

I would actually really like to test the 0-60 acceleration of my car as is right now. I recently did a 15-60mph 'race' with a friend in a '06 Mercedes C230 sport sedan. He has about 201hp with a 0-60 time of i believe 8-seconds or so. He started in 1st and i started in 2nd from about 15mph. He pulled away with about 2-3 car lengths by the time i hit 60mph and we both backed off. I am curious to know how my car compares to his in acceleration right now, 18-years and 75,800k miles later. Ill need to borrow a G-tech meter from a friend probably. I am waiting for the next time i can try a similar sprint from 15-60mph with me in first. I still figure he would beat me, but i wonder how much i can close the gap.

I did a like 15-max 2nd gear thing the other day. Didn't take long to hit 15-55. Starting in first would have been better. My truck is kinda sluggish when you peg the throttle at 10-15 in second.

Wonder what the 89T means?
89 is the load rating (1279 lbs), 'T' is the speed rating (118mph).

I highly doubt it. Neither of the two previous owners sound like they were performance-minded people.
The second owner told me she sold it because she didn't like driving a sports car...
