Default New Windshield

I'm getting a new windshield installed tomorrow (Sat) by Safelite. Anything in particular I should watch out for? They come to your home to do it so I'll be observing the process. The plain early 944 windshield is only costing $206. My original is pretty well sandblasted.

A couple of years ago, I replaced mine with a factory Sekurit with the tint and antenna for $400.

Mine was not OEM glass for the $206. But I'm not too concerned as long as it doesn't leak and doesn't crack! I watched the guy do it. Pretty straightforward. One interesting tidbit though: Porsche (and Mercedes) OEM installation of windshield includes a wire embedded in the sealant. It loops around the whole frame and the idea is that you dig out each end of the wire and connect to a power source and the resistance heating warms up the sealant making it easier to pull the glass. The installer said it works poorly in practice though (I think he meant too slow). They actually heat up the sealer before application with an electric caulking gun (or your hand would get real sore).

Did they any trouble getting your molding clips off? On my 83 a guy came out and said he wouldn't do it because it's best done in a shop to prevent damage to the molding.. I think he was just lazy and had a bad hair day going. I ended up taking mine to a shop where they had a special clip tool.

I just replaced the windshield on my 87 951. Here are some of myexperiences:

1) Watch the guy when he replaces the windshield, and make sure he doesn't damage anything. My guy leaned on the side rear mirror when he took off the windshield, and he snapped the mirror off from the housing. I needed to bring my car to a bodyshop to replace and repaint the mirror. Even the window company paid for the mirror repair cost, it was much trouble.

2) When replace the windshield, also replace the molding around the windshield. It is a cheap part to prevent future water leak, wind noise, etc.

3) If you have embedded radio antenna on the windshield, make sure the replacement one has one. Some aftermarket windshield doesn't have it.

4) After replacing the windshield, wait at least one day for the glue to dry. Don't wash the car and don't park it under a hot Sun.

5) Immediately after repacing the windshield, go for a drive on the freeway and see if there is any abnormal wind noise. Sometimes the guy put too much (thick) glue on the windshield, made the windshield sits higher on the frame, and created abnormal wind nose. If so, ask the guy to fix it before the glue dried.

With best regards,
- Alex.

Anyone use a windshield shop (mobile or drive-in) they like in San Diego? Or experience with one of those national referral boards online?

No problem with the molding clips - the guy had the special tool. All else looks good.
