Not a low mileage S2, but I picked up a 165k miles S2 with minor issues in Washington over this summer for only $4.5k from a Rennlister. I'd call it in 'fair' condition.

The kind of car you're describing may not be as easy to price as the run of the mill variety. Mileage is a key, as is condition and maintenance records. While I was looking at mine - 89 S2 with 12.5k miles on it, the range given by friendly Rennlisters was $13.5-18k. I believe that you might need to see the car to find the exact value in that range.
Some days I feel badly for paying what I paid, some days I feel that I should keep the mileage low and not drive it. Some days, like last month when a Porsche mechanic looked at it and declared that he had not seen one of these in this condition for over 10 years and guessed that it was one of maybe a handful left in this good of condition, I feel pretty satisfied. Every day I get to drive it, I feel like a lucky guy.

There was an S2 here in the classifieds that was very well maintained, less than 105k miles and it went for $6.5k. I saw an 80-90k mile car at the Porsche Heaven swap meet that looked very nice and he was asking $7.9. I have seen others go on eBay that looked pretty good on the computer screen, (for what that is worth) and they went for less than $7k.
So whatever, good luck and I hope you find a nice one for a fair price.

As for the maintenance issue, I have had both 951s and S2s. I found the 951s to have significantly higher maintenance needs. When looking for my current car, I definately wanted an S2 as I believe them to be more reliable and quicker around town (no turbo lag). The 951 is the way to go if you want to modify it as not a lot can be done to the S2. I would expect to pay around $10-12.5k for a nice example of an S2.

My '89 S2 w/ 108k is very clean, and very well maintained. Wouldn't sell it for less than $10k.
So condition is also important. Many higher mile cars have been completely rebuilt at great cost.

I remember a thread where JimK was looking for an S2 - he referred to the April '05 issue of Excellence magazine as having a market value article on them. I have not seen it, however.

Tom - I got a good price on the "barn" S2 as the owner was going through some personal issues and wanted to get rid of the car. I was able to get the car for $11k although the air bag computer is bad as is going to cost a mint if I want it fixed. The car is 100% stock with mechanical being a 9/10, interior 9/10 and paint 7.5/10.

I figured I'd add my $.02 to the discussion. I was very fortunate to find the right car. I found a one owner 89 944S2 Coupe, Red/Black, Partial Leather, factory LSD, with 79k miles. The car is in excellent condition, new clutch, brand new tires, all belts and major service recently completed ($4k reciept with the clutch from Reitzl Porsche in MA) with all books, fully stamped mtc booklet, every record since the car was new, bill of sale, yada yada yada. Paint in excellent condition, interior looks brand new. No snow, garaged etc.
Only issue is two small spots that I need to get taken care of on the body with paintless dent removal. I looked for quite a while for the right car and lost 2 or 3 because I either didn't act quick enough, or wasn't willing to pay enough. I finally decided I wasn't going to loose the right car when it came along for a difference of 1000 bucks more or less. I paid $11k for the car, and flew from Atlanta to Boston to pick it up and drive it back. Had a great time. Now the mods begin to turn it into a fun track/street car. The car will be used primarily for DE's and as a weekend car.
Did I pay a little too much? Maybe.....maybe not. Only I can say it was worth it for me. IMHO, $11k for a very nice S2 is a fantastic deal.
My advice to those looking is take your time and don't get discouraged, if you want a really nice car, it will take you a while (there are a lot of "OK" cars out there), but a very nice S2 is hard to find (in my experience).
One of the best things was Rennlist found my car for me. I had been looking for a while and had responded to many ads. Finally I posted on Rennlist that I was looking for a nice S2. The gentlemen who I bought my car from hadn't put it up for sale yet, but contacted me in response to my post. We struck a deal within 24hrs and I picked up the car the next week. This is my forth Porsche and I have travelled at least 1000 miles to buy each one and drive it home. Don't be afraid to travel to find the right car, driving it home is a blast. Just do your homework and have a PPI done, get pics, talk to who has been maintaining the car etc.
Have fun!

I'd have to concur with Jim. Don't be in a rush to find the right car.
I guess I was lucky. It was the third 944 that I was interested in. Walked away from the first one 'cause the PPI came back so bad, from the second one 'cause the owner didn't even want to do a PPI, and lucked out on the third one. My guess was that this was atypical.
Bought the third one, the S2, for $6,700 and although it's a high milage car, it was in pretty good shape, and getting better, had all the records, and recent major work completed, so all things considered, good shape.
I'm lucky, it's mine now, and it'll take a lot for me to sell it, as I'm just having a ball doing DEs with it, and working on it. Certainly doing as much of the work yourself is a way to lower the total cost of ownership (TCO).
