0-60mph times don't really show how much low end torque you have. You can rev a car up to 3500-4000 rpms and then take off. I know I personally got a 7.68 in my S.

S
6.5
6.8
7.5

S2
6.0
6.4
6.6
6.7

true, but low-end torque is ultimately more important if you want acceleration without toasting the drivetrain everytime you launch. factory numbers are 7.7 and 6.7 for the S and S2. they are not the same up to 4K. S2 will be faster everytime.

i own an 88. it not real impressive until 4300 rpm, then it is really illegal.bye the time it gets fun your into the 70's.if you look at the specs the extra 38 horsepower was accompany with additional weigth.@200 kilos.it does have a stronger tranny with taller gears to help with getting the rpm's higher faster double overhead cams are more for top end (more of a highway car).the 944 had faster tranny and also faster 1/4 mile times .the timing gears can't be ignored. if they go your facing a 2 grand repair if you do all the work on it. BUT!!!!! a 968 motor drops right in an S then you'll have quite a car. thats the story of mine. Good luck
Marty

Thanks Karl Glynn at Weissach.net for those numbers. I guess my S is not so slow after all. Good comparison numbers.

Thanks
Interesting replies here, I thought that I'd chime in here also.
I've owned my "S" for a little over two years now.
As you know by now the S has a completely different head than an 8V N/A or a turbo. There is additional maintenance on any car that has more parts and more things to go wrong, including a turbo.
What really matters is the condition and previous maintenance of the car that you are considering. These cars are basically 20 years old and there's no getting around the fact that things are going to need replacement.
That being said, I have to say that I enjoy my 16V engine as it enjoys revving a little higher than 8V engines. It also sounds different than an 8V engine. While there's not a tremendous differnece, there are 30 more horses under the hood and it is noticeable. If you find a good one, go for it!
