Fuel Gauge: can it be removed from the gauge cluster?
My fuel gauge is out of order, and Thad (thf944) has a cluster for sale. Ideally, I would buy the cluster from him, pull mine out when it arrives, and swap out just the fuel gauge. Can this be done, or do I need to send my whole cluster to get the gauge fixed?

I think in the later model cars the gauges are all electronic and on the same board. I had an issue with mine sticking, and upon taking it apart learned that I'd have to live with it, its a lot of trouble I believe.

To answer my own question...
I just got the gauge cluster in good order from Thad in the mail today. It is removable. The coolant / engine temp and gas gauge come out as 1 unit. I will be swapping these two gauges as well as removing the flaking reflective silver coating on the "light passages," and painting them with some "chrome" or silver paint. The result will be me knowing how much gas I have , and a brighter guage cluster. woohooo!

I tried the paint method with disasterous results. Not brighter at all. I used Heavy Duty aluminum foil. Much better.

Hrm... I hesitate to "install" alluminum foil for a perminant fix on my car. It seems so hack like. I suppose it could be done quite neatly and tidy-like with some matching alluminum foil tape to attach the Heavy Duty foil.

It works so don't worry about how it looks. You won't be looking at the bottom of the gauge cluster while driving .
