Default Clutch/Torque Tube/Procrastination

Well, all I have managed to do so far is get bigger jacks.

Looks like enough room.

Also appears there is a brake line leaking somewhere.

If anything looks odd (like the jacks look unsafely placed), speak up!

Disconnected the battery, Removed the speed and reference sensors, then the ground wire going to the bellhousing.

It does not appear the start cable support was re-attached by whomever ventured here before, but I will properly reassemble it.

Connections will get a good cleaning before going back on, possible replacement of the cable. Also noticed how much easier it would be to replace the heater valve during this process.

Exhaust is removed. Cat and muffler heat shields removed. Hangers mounted to the torque tube loosened.

Loosened the bolt holding the shift rod to the tranny. Actually, I removed it and marked it.

Removed the shifter and pulled the shift rod forward about a foot.

I noticed one of my jack stands is not exactly where I would like it, so I need to fix that.

Time to take a break, FYI guys and gals, so far, nothing major.

Other than wishing I had smaller hands . . .

I found during the clutch job on my 83 that the front jack stands were in my way if placed on the frame rails. You will really need some room to swing a breaker bar and wrestle with the bellhousing and the wider placement of the stands will provide it. I use the front outer supports behind the wheels. If this makes you uncomfortable, you can always place a board and small jack under the crossmember. Be sure and slide that TT/TA coupling back first before unbolting the TA, any movement from pulling the TA to TT mounting bolts will bind the coupling up in no time and probably damage the coupling. Clutches on these are an 'E-ticket to Hell' but you'll get through it. Good Luck.

MY83... It's not really that difficult, just time consumptive!

The ONE thing I can impart that I failed in... Whatever guide/sheet or set of instructions you use... do each step IN THE ORDER in which it is presented and then be certain, when you reassemble the beastie, to perform each step IN THE ORDER in which it is presented!!! Can't remember the specifics, but I spent a hour or so extra because I transposed a couple of steps. My Bad!!!

You'll do fine!!!

Valuable tips guys, thanks.

Using the factory manuals, step by step . . . .

So far so good, and nothing but time, so that pressure is not there.

I would like to have is all apart by tomorrow evening.

And to have all required parts ordered.

I see several bolts missing, for which I am thankful.

Just the really hard ones on the upper rear of the torque tube "bell housing" and a couple on the clutch bell housing.

The plan is to replace those during assembly, unless you feel they are not really needed.

I am pretty sure the torque tube bearings are shot.

The budget is about a grand, I have my fingers crossed.

Again, thank you for the tips! I'll be checking in as this continues.

My son came in from Columbia, and we pulled the tranny. The upper right bolt in the clutch bellhousing is a pain.

We made a lot of progress -

Stuck now, decided to call it a night -

The bellhousing seems stuck on something -

We are following the Porsche manual, going to re-read them AGAIN . . . .

Any ideas?

We pulled the sensors, but not the sensor holder - could that be it? I thought that stayed, and best not to touch it.

Could it be a siezed throughout bearing?

Ideas?

Need sleep . . . . .

Thanks in advance, I will check back in the AM

Oh - on a side note, there was a concern on our part the torque tube bearings went bad.

The shaft spins effortlessly and without any noise, I think it is AOK!

Back to working on that bell housing removal -

Well, I had not pulled the shaft out for the release lever. That was a pain, it was difficult to pull out. Now the clutch should be coming out within a few hours.
Also managed this mistake -

OMG, It has been 6 weeks and here is all the farther I have gone -

The allen heads already ticked me off . . . .

Anything jump out from these pic's?

Any reason you can think of that I should procrastinate some more?

I wish, someone replace those with allen heads at the last clutch change.

No problem, been here before, time and patience.

Actually the 83 did have allens not triple-squares on the PP, flywheel had triple-squares. My 160K original PP was all allens. I used a 1-piece allen socket on a 1/4" drive. PB Blaster them and wake them up with a couple sharp hammer raps with the socket. They are not torqued very high at all and came out easy on mine. I replaced them with new allens since they seemed to work for the last 22 years with no problem.

They are all out but one.

The Snap-On van came to the shop today, spent $16.00 of his tool.

Next time, I will buy the better tool, $10.00 is nothing. Was able to remove them all but the one the Craftsman (and I) buggered up.

The Cornwell van comes tomorrow, good time to buy some extractors.

Good info people, thank you.
